Description

I've been playing stardew valley during the entirety of the last 2 days, this is the first sketch I managed to do since then.

Which is why I might've been slow on responding to people, or drawing in general

:'> I'm gonna prefix this with: I'm emotionally totally fine,, it's just energy-wise that I just deflated like a balloon after the final verdict of me not getting into that one university. Combine that with the knowledge that I now need to redo all the application-stuff, and exam/interview things to hopefully get into the plan B which should be more accessible. But while also just keeping in mind that I shouldn't get my hopes up too early, because a majority of people who apply for that plan B option are people who've tried for that other uni,,

SO, in conclusion I just don't know where I stand skill-level wise in the context of trying to get into animation classes. It was like waking up from a dream, realizing how damn focused I was on getting into that one university. Though without that focus, I probably wouldn't have been able to have the necessary drive to do the best I could.

But in the end plan C is to continue doing my own stuff during another sabbatical,, maybe try tackling bigger animation projetcs etc. Because the thing that I do know, is where my art stands online. To put it like this, I know that my skills are in demand,, I have people commissioning me, and asking for advice regularly - thus I can always fall back to this even when all else fails. and that's all thanks to you guys<3333

:'I and yeah, you don't need a diploma to get big in the art industry,, but I just want to get the experience of studying in such an art-focused environment. And I also want to get all these worries and thoughts of uncertainty out of the way already. I've been focused on getting into an animation university since December last year while juggling several projects, commissions, and occasionally personal artwork (and yeah both my sis and mom tell me I should just take a vacation already,, but I can't do that man,, even after 2 days I start getting the urge to get back into the whole mess)

TLDR: a 5 and 1/2 month-long focus on this one big trial followed by not succeeding sure puts a break on your drive.

It did give me lots of experience though at the very least,, next time I try ( if I do ) it'll certainly be a -little bit- less nerve-wracking

And thank y'all for your continuous support!! I can't wait to just get back into productivity

I know exactly how that feels T^TΒ
Working so hard towards a goal and then falling just short always sucks; just gotta keep on trying and doing what you love, and make the university regret not accepting you the first time around!Β

(Massive fan of your art by the way, I follow lots of amazing, talented people but I always find myself skipping over their art to look at yours haha)

From experience, I know how hard making university stuff work out can be. Trust me, I'll spare you the details but I've been there big time. No matter where you end up though, its possible to find success and happiness on your own terms. I couldn't make either of my top 2 dream schools work out, but I have to say I'm happier than I've ever been before at a school I considered a lesser option, and the world after graduation is looking pretty bright.

(That's not to say you should settle, by any means, but you might be surprised by the places you end up.)

Best of luck to you, and I love the dragon!

I totally get how you feel, I've had a similar though non-art related experience considering grad school. But hey, not only did it work out in the end for me, it worked out for the better because I didn't get into schools I thought I wanted and after a three year "break" I ended up getting in the perfect school for me with the perfect advisory and all the more determined because I knew I was doing what I wanted/needed to do.

Keep the faith, and keep pursuing your dreams, friend.

Hello Rem!! I'm sorry you didn't end up going to that university ;;;Β I feel like i'm kinda in the same pit of not having much of a direction or focus, which is kinda leading me into being inactive on social media with art (even though I still do art I just never post it). Your art is wonderful so i don't see why no one would accept you ;3; I encourage you to keep going cause you have a lotΒ of potential <3Β

I also wanted to ask you a random question but, I'm having kinda a dilemma on my current work position. Basically my mom is always striving me to get a job, even though I have done commissions since I was 12. I'm just wondering if you just do art as your current job or have you had to work at another job while keeping up with your art commissions on the side? I honestly don't want to get another job because art is what I love to do, and I feel like it'll be harder to physically try and do both jobs at the same time. Although I am trying to get another job where I'm not standing for a long amount of time aa. I currently live with my parents and going to school, but I plan on moving out next year and hopefully living with my girlfriend with her parents and continuing practicing my art. I didn't know if you had any advice ;w; but I appreciate you listening and taking the time to read <33 I appreciate you thanks aa

Remarin In reply to LilTeaPlease [2018-05-29 21:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Yo! Thank you very much, and I highly advise you talk to your mother about what "freelancing" is!!

I don't have any other job other than my commissions, my youtube channel, and some projects on the side,, and all of this I would include as "freelancing".

It's a very prevelant job-type in the digital art industry, and when writing your resume, you can absolutely say "been doing freelance-work since 12".

It basically means: As an artist, I prefer working from home rather than in an art Studio/office. I prefer taking control of my own schedule, finances, advertising, managing, etc, and I want the freedom of picking projects, rather than being dependant on what the studio currently is working on. Best case scenario: I can pick my own clients, I can pick my own working rates ( pay-per-hour ) /or my own prices - and I can plan my day based on what I want to work on at that moment.

It will be tough organization-wise, and you might have moments where you have to pick bad projects just to get by that month, but there will be much more freedom as compensation. (You will also have less daily social interaction than if you're working in a team, but since you have a girlfriend you at least some human contact)

Commissions are usually at best a handful of illustration/artwork for one person, but freelancing also means stuff like "this person is working on an indie-game, and needs an artist to design his characters for the animators - you will be asked to draw 5 concept sketches for 10 characters each, and I'll give you X.000$ for your work, and you have one month, I will pay you half upfront and half when it's all finished" You put it down into a contract, or ask for changes in the payment method, but ultimately you need to make sure neither of you can just disappear.

At the beginning you might be asked more often stuff like: "hey can you illustrate this comic for me? We'll split the revenue 50/50 once it's all done" And it's up to you to judge wether you think it's a good idea or not. For this example, test how serious the other person is. You can ask them wether they've already made a script (planned out panneling / dialog) and wether they've already contacted a publishing company, which would mean that the story itself was already approved.

Freelancing means, that you bear the responsability to know which projects will work out, and which won't - and to know what you are capable of doing in a certain timespan / in case there's deadlines.

--- I keep a youtube playlist of videos I've found helpful, motivational or -informative-, and there are a handful by freelancers/independent artists too:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j7xq6… "the art of freelancing with Noah Bradley"

www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfOd1-… "How to be a freelancer" - Will Terrel

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rncXy… 2-hour talk with 4 freelance artists about concept art (anthony jones is one of them - makes amazing creature illustrations and gives online art lessons at his website "robotpencil"; and Ross "draws" Tran, who you might've seen on youtube is also considered a freelance artist)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n9X1L… "so you want to be an illustrator?" (it's been a while since I watched this, but I think this one talks a bit more about the tougher side of things?)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0UyV-… "getting what you want out of your art career" (I really should rewatch all these videos, I don't remember the key points,, but they all were part of my early 2017 phase where I binged tons of videos on the topic of freelance and concept art)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zoRBt…

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW3jkU…

^^^both of these talk about the struggles you might meet as a freelance artist, not every client will be a good experience to work with.

I think the first video might be best to show your mother, it talks a bit about the preconceptions people have about freelancing, pros and cons etc

---

I don't have that much experience yet with taking on bigger projects than artwork commissions,, I'm currently having trouble with breaking out of my comfortzone for illustrating a comic, and for animating for an indie-platforming game - both projects that have the "paid when revenue comes in"-system. I've contributed to a zine, with the prospect of getting paid once the kickstarter is succesfull and the ability to sell digital copies of the whole thing later. And I've been asked to design a skin for a gun-mod in CS:GO, where I got paid upfront and after finish, with the shared "revenue once it's selling".

All of these opportunities came to me through deviantart without me seeking out projects,,, so to bring it all back to your comment: you benefit a lot by being active on social media!! >:0 throw your art at anyone who might even glance at it, you gotta advertise your skills! Having your art seen by the right people at the right time is a thing of pure luck, and the more active you are, the better your chances will be.

Totally got you Rem. WAs in exactly same spot years ago when I was applying for my university and spend half a year on portfolio work and all that stuff. It totally is creatively draining so taking a break is a really good choice. We, artists, have to learn that sometimes not doing anything is as much fruitfull as doing everything :'D It's also good to see that you have a very rational attitude about all of this and as much as it is a bummer that you didn't get in, all the other doors are still open. But I totally agree with your mom and sis - TAKE A VACATION. You totally deserve it!!!! You are totally worth your free time C:<

Very well done on this piece! Can I ask you something and it's okay to be honest with me. Do you think my work is good enough for me to start my own commissions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Remarin In reply to FantasyRebirth96 [2018-05-29 18:29:16 +0000 UTC]

You can start whenever you feel ready to start!!! If you think your artwork isn't yet at a good-enough level, then you can say it as it is; that your first and primary goal is to improve over longterm, and commissions would be a way for your watchers to support that growth directly.

Over the span of 5 years, I slowly raised my prices parallel to my own skill. Going from 5$, to 12$, to 20$ and now currently nearing 100$,, but you could just test the waters any way you want!

But thus at the start I was mostly focused just on personally getting better, so it was in my best interest to just do as well as I can at any time,, and people will notice when you give an artwork your all vs. when you didn't care for it. There is more to art than just technical skill!

So commissions were a huge contributor to my early improvement. It forced me to be productive - thus I was exposed to more frequent practice, I occasionally was given a subject I was not familiar with thus I could broaden my comfort-zone, and I slowly got used to drawing without having to depend on that specific mix between inspiration and motivation.

The latter is important, because if you're not used to drawing -for- other people, then my best advice is: be as transparent as possible about it. Having someone pay you for your art, can suddenly make drawing feel like a chore,, even for subjects you love drawing. If you're caught off-guard, then that can lead to some really bad procrastination.Β

But back to commissions; to get asks, you need an audience that is aware that you do commissions. The best way to regularly "advertise" that fact, is to post commissioned artwork and call it such/mention it in the description. It's the first steps that are always the slowest :'>

When I started I offered commissions for like 20 dA-points (which was before you could even think about transfering those back into money) and I was too young for a paypal anyway. Commissionnnnnn <-this was my what my art looked like at that point.

Back then, you could get commission-asks from people who didn't even watch you, just because people tended to search for any point-commission artist on dA. I'm not sure how well that works now; but if you simply want to maxify your asks, then I'd advise to do both points-and paypal commissions.

You can always let your watchers know beforehand, that you will adapt and change your commission-details in the future,, in case you're worried about being stuck with your initial prices. The only thing you shouldn't do, is change prices in the middle of exchanging information with commissioners. (If you do, let the current commissioners use the old prices that they signed up for)

Here's also one of my old journals, with I think my first ever price-list COMMISSIONS -closed- :'I from 5 years ago. Don't let the fancy textures of my old artwork fool you, I didn't know at all what I was doing.

--oof sorry, for the sudden wall of text,, commissioning is like a less grand version of "freelancing" so there is already lot's of business aspects to it, so I could go on for much longer. Let's sum it up, you'll do absolutely fine if you:

-communicate what's going on/your intentions/be transparent

-don't loose track of time, be mindful of procrastination

-be kind and respectful (there are tons of people who've had bad experiences with commission-artist; having a good reputation is more valuable than you think. If people enjoyed the interaction with you, then they will come back for more - even if it's just to basically throw money at you)

Other than that, at the beginning it might be all about being patient and presistent. Later on it'll be about self-management and work-flow owo"

But I will practice and strive to improve. Do my best too^^ I'm sure if I do that, it'll matter in the end right?

idk i might just be retarded

but i dont think ima ever go study art when I could do it by myself, using the internet and observing etc

i just need discipline and a routine but as i dont have a normal workspace, all i have is my bed and table that's cramped with stuff

and my laptop on it, it's hard to concentrate, and sitting is uncomfortable even tho ive been sitting on a bed near a table for years

i find that it started to bother me

i hope that will change someday, hopefully soon and I'll be able to work properly near a desk T_T

I've been drawing digitally for the last 7 years, and I've basically done it independantly (doing my own research, my own studies (occasionally) etcetc)

Discipline plays a huge role in wether you are able to do the same kind of improvement as a student. At the school I was applying you'd start your day at 8-10 a.m and stop at 5-6 p.m,, but it was not unusual for people to stay until 8 p.m. simply to continue working. That's vaguely 6-8 hours a day spent on art related stuff. Are you able to do that 5 days in a row, just from your sheer will? I certainly don't :'0 I barely can do half of those hours on my own, and I often take a day-long break afterwards.

But yes, you can learn a lot by yourself, even if the improvement curve might be less intense (it certainly is less expensive)

If I were applying for illustration or "digital art", I'd basically only be going for the networking, and the official diploma. But I was applying for an animation university, and I barely have scratched the surface of what there is to learn in animation (and don't even start about 3D!! Do you even know how complex a professional 3D program is to handle for a beginner??? I don't even know how to make cube into a sphere if you'd just plop me into Blender or Maya. And being able to advertise your skill in various professional programs is like the key-component to making demo-reels for game-developpers for example. Sure, you can make 3D models in some random free softwares that has like 10 tools-options,, but they have no use for that if they can't transfer that data into other programs.)

For this uni, I'd say they simply want to have students that won't lag behind in the classes due to inexperience or some kind of lacking; which might be overcome with some extra time spent from the student; but that extra time could become murderous after accumulating over a couple of months.

I went on a tangent there myself,, but on the table-topic; I've had a laptop instead of a computer now for like 2 years, and the only time I worked on something in my bed, was when I was really sick :'I As a kid I've always been envious of my friends when they had laptops that they could just bring to their bed,, but I never actually got out of the habit of working at my desk.

A lot of those big name schools (like Gobelins) aren't necessarily for people just starting out. I mean you can always apply of course but often times people go to an easier school to get the basics and then follow it up with a better school.
Like... take it from someone on a "meh" kind of school, Rem's skill level is already higher than most people after an entire year on my school. (if those people don't put a lot of effort into self study but still)
The one positive thing about these schools is that they force you to be productive and they do teach you a LOT of things you wouldn't really be able to figure out on your own.
