Description Creating the SD version of Space Godzilla was a learning experience. After that burn out with MOGUERA, I decided to do a sketch study of the big blue clone to throughly get a feel for his character. Wacky as it may be. The sketches and my conclusions can be found here: [link] . This time there are no redesigned elements save for the knee crystal rings. I added those just because. Other than that its Heisei, through and through. You may wonder: why? why didn't you try to make him more awesome? Simple, because the humor demands it. Up to now I've been making corellations between the kaiju and real life culture classics. From internet meme's to song lyrics to super heroes. I've never actually poked fun at the kaiju themselves...until now. See, Space Godzilla is a joke unto himself. No offense to those that like him and all he could have been but Toho royally fucked this one up. Took me forever to see it but its true. On the surface he looks awesome but deep down, the guy is a walking travesty in terms of design. You understand that when you attempt drawing him. For those wondering yes, that is a black hole behind him.

By now the part of the Godzilla fandom that hate Space Godzilla with a passion probably want to kill me right now. However, there is a method to my madness. I present the humor-

SD is the heisei taken to its agonizingly hilarious conclusion. All major traits are distilled and blown out of perportion while everything else is shrunk. When you look at Space Godzilla you have to realize a couple things. He's covered in crystals, spends half the time hiding behind cover, uses REALLY FLASHY attacks, has a gut shaped like a vagina, wears a crown and waves his forearms around at waist level in an overly dramatic fashion. Conclusion? For all intents and purposes he is a raving homosexual. He looks as normal as SD can get but here, his true personality gets to shine...and glitter...and...yeah.-

So there you have it. Space Godzilla in a nutshell. Now we know the REAL reason why he kidnapped Godzilla Jr...

Next Up: Destroyah ( )

Hmmm... I wonder how the movie would go if instead of Space Godzilla (Or should I say Fabulous Godzilla? 😆), they had Biollante show up again, but this time as an extremely powerful space monster that looks even more like Godzilla, with a few extra features. Maybe have her be the one that ends up flying into a black hole with a crystal organism instead of just some of Godzilla's cells. And since Erika isn't part of her anymore (Erika passed on to the spirit world at the end of Godzilla vs Biollante if I remember correctly.), Biollante would act even more viscous. Like how Godzilla used to be before Godzilla Junior came into his life, only a lot worse. What do you think Ren? 😊

That's another possible route that would have frankly redeemed the concept infinitely and not simply taken the fan given idea that was Biollante and cover it up with time travel shenanigans (like they literally used the next movie to retcon the previous one out of existence). However even the fabulous SG incarnation could be redeemed if he was played out in a fashion akin to a JoJo villain. Ie, eccentric and hammy beyond belief, willing to go to extreme measures of villainy and ultimately has the most cathartic and ironic defeat as a result. I mean, it's a psychic monster. It's clearly intelligent, they had a psychic woman right there in the character cast, why didn't they just connect the dots and have something of a conversation? It's always been one of my major critiques of Kaiju Eiga in general is that the human cast has a very hard time actually making themselves important enough to care about. Tying SG to Biollante makes visual sense due to the anatomical features they both share, like the tusks.

I'd actually like to see that take on Space Godzilla...which honestly needs a better name lol.

Having Miki and Space Godzilla telepathically speak to each other would be an interesting scene. I don't think it would go very well for Miki though. Space Godzilla would probably end up doing the same thing Godzilla did when she tried to telepathically communicate with him, but instead of putting her into a coma for a while, he would actually kill her.

As for the movie, having Biollante come back as a space monster that looks more like Godzilla and having her be a lot more vicious would definitely have been a lot better. Either that, or instead of completely changing everything there is about King Ghidorah, how about having him show up as the golden, planet destroying space dragon he is, and have that be the very first encounter and fight Godzilla has with him.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all of the 90's Godzilla movies, but there is some really screwy stuff that goes on in them when you think about it. Hopefully they'll take the Shin Gojira franchise a bit more seriously. Speaking of which, what do you think about the new movie? Do you like what they did with Godzilla, or do you have mixed feelings about it?

RenDragonClaw In reply to Azure-Hokage1392 [2016-08-20 10:22:19 +0000 UTC]

Some would argue that with Shin Gojira they went 'too seriously'. Like borderline edgelord territory. Showa Godzilla was my early childhood and Heisei Godzilla was my late childhood so I enjoy the aspects of both kinds of character interpretation. An angry grump that becomes a hero over time or a surly, lonely and vengeful as hell warrior that dies as he lived: on fire and roaring to the heavens. Make no mistake though Shin Gojira is a return to the original Gojira pathos. A straight up monster. Not soulless and petty like the GMK Godzilla but a mountain of pain and wrath that seems to be fueled by raw force of will. The thing literally grew out of of his own skeleton now at the tip of his tail. He is a 'horror' themed Godzilla, as was the original. Those manic beady eyes are tell tale indication that this Gojira is an antagonist. Much how in many suits before, Godzilla's eyes were give large whites and tiny pupils to indicate an highly aggressive and intense (villainous) disposition within suit limitations. He's very visceral looking and I think this will finally relieve that massive 'death and ruin boner' that a large part of the fandom has had for a long time. Having seen what's available right now, I'd say that we are in for something akin to 1985 but without the inherent tragedy of Godzilla being a monster forced out of his time and into the wrong place. It's going to be the punish mankind slasher hour with lots of grim faces and plenty of navel contemplating along the lines of 'what did we do to deserve this' and the answer being 'you fucked up and learned nothing'.  I'm neutral about him at the moment.

I've been keeping track on what goes on in the movie. I even watched some spoilers on YouTube regarding it (I honestly don't mind spoilers because they make me look forward to the movie more than I already do.), and the only thing I'll say about it without spoiling anything is this is definitely a completely different Godzilla. They changed a lot, but to me, it's definitely still the Godzilla that we all know and love. Just a lot more powerful and a lot more terrifying.

I know, sorry. This is just not how I thought Space Godzilla would be represented,at ALL.He is not actually "gay",but he is as intelligent as a human, and deformed from the extra teeth.I was expecting the deviation to be SG looming over a city,or something more evil. And about the "gay" part,I have nothing against gays,Obama says your orientation doesn't matter.

RenDragonClaw In reply to TheDeathMachine [2013-10-06 16:26:28 +0000 UTC]

If you're looking for that, I went that exact direction when I did SD Krystalak.

Though I suppose I should further explain the reasoning for this. See, I was once a real direhard fan of Spacegodzilla. Mainly because like any 13 year old boy I loved explosions, monsters and powerlevels and Spacegodzilla was in the list of films (Heisei Era- the 90's) that played a large part in how I learned of Godzilla. At the time, Spacegodzilla was the supervillain counterpart of the omnicidal Destoroyah in my mind and I felt that was a lasting icon. Apparently others felt the same because he was the major antagonist of the last two Pipeworks Godzilla games, to a fault as it turned out.

But, when I actually started learning how the genre ticked and what went into kaiju designs and the various tropes that seed themselves throughout both the Godzilla films and similar properties, I had to realize that the Heisei Era did some things right and some things wrong. Spacegodzilla is a good example of everything that is ridiculous from the 90's films. He's grossly bloated, he's yet another clone with the laziest name possible, he relies far too much on beam spam and gimicks, his design features have unfortunate implications when they should have been rather horrific, and all of the things that should have made him a memorable nemesis serve only to wreck his credability further because his a clone, of GODZILLA. Which means at the bare minimum there should have been a clear similarity in purpose and action. Spacegodzilla should have behaved like Godzilla if a bit more deranged. Spacegodzilla's MO and powers are more in line with that of alien invader and that's the role he fullfills verbatim. You could have switched him out for Gigan and it have made a lot more sense, especially since Gigan actually exists as a tool for planetary conquest and is known for being a craven, dirty bastard that WOULD had gone with the kidnapping of Godzilla Jr. to gain an edge or lure Godzilla onto a more advantageous playing field.

But the whole reason people get hung up on Spacegodzilla is that he's supposedly a super powered Godzilla...from space...with design elements appropiated (badly) from the Super Godzilla form in the SNES game of the same name. But Spacegodzilla does not act like a Godzilla, even for the cumbersome and laser happy battles Heisei is known for, Spacegodzilla takes it to hilarious extremes. He's an 'anti-Godzilla' in the worst possible way. One would think that being so contrasting would make him a better villain but the thing that makes him memorable is what also makes him laughable. So while I don't consider being gay a negative thing anymore than you do, Spacegodzilla characterwise is a straight up Diva. And a lot of people at the time during my character study I did before this pic (a habit I got into making for this series) agreed with this interpretation and likewise found it to be a good humor angle. Spacegodzilla is the closest thing you'll get to a Godzilla type monster in drag. And from my experience a lot of people find sassy, overdramatic, drag queen type characters to be at least attention grabbing if not outright hysterical. That's why you see them crop up a lot in modern media. It's because they are 'simply outrageous'. If you look at Japanese media, the major villain many times is an extremely pretty (bordering on transexual in some extreme cases) yet impossibly skilled man. Spacegodzilla is THAT for the Heisei Era or as close as a kaiju can get. It just so happens to fly in the face of everything Godzilla is and thus ruins the expectation of things that are made from him. For Spacegodzilla to have a couple of Biollante's traits to give some further credit to his origins just makes it an even more bitter pill to swallow. But even the idea that Spacegodzilla is a bastardized abomination of Godzilla (Biollante again and Orga did it better) falls flat in the face of how silly Spacegodzilla is in context.

So, while you may not find it funny. A majority of the people I spoke with and that commented on my sketch study did. And it's an understandable backlash against all the ignorant fans that think Spacegodzilla is the height of Godzilla's enemies in terms of design and feats. It's kinda of mind boggling how overrated he is.

I can't believe I never caught that.... XP It's SO true...

Of course, He-Man - the most powerful man in the Universe!!! - is hardly afraid to use the word "fabulous", but I guess he's comfortable enough with his masculinity not to give a crap. XP

The mug here works on SO many levels...

Modifying his design would probably have taken away from the satire involved, so there's not much to be said in terms of redesign.

This is easily one of my favorites, though. XP

Well, Dessy's a tricky matter. For one, there's the whole gender debate.
Personally, I favor the female party, but there's probably some comedic potential in the whole argument.

Personally, I also dig the Neo design - though it's understandable how some prefer a build that more mirrors Godzilla's.
Though I'd avoid any Giant Enemy Crab jokes. WAY too obvious.

RenDragonClaw In reply to GREGOLE [2008-07-10 19:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Personally, Destroyah to me has always been a big, demonic, 'it'. Being a creature made from literally trillions of mutated crustaceans and having the ability to regenerate and change between forms as rapidly as it does; I really don't think the big D has need for extra plumbing. It just complicates things. Technically big D is A-sexual. No need to worry about crab jokes, that's Ebirah's territory and I don't think Snake could take another beating like that . After I do my sketch study I'll be able to cement the idea. Thanks for the tips Gregole.
