Description

Phew, glad to have this one out the way. I spent a bit more time on this one compared to my others, about six hours in total. I decided to make Charizard less...fat, but still retaining that classic stockiness that it has. Also, before any of you ask why its wings are arms, here's a biology lesson for you. Wings and arms are homologous structures!  They have the same form but a different function; they're not entirely different things (you'd be surprised how often I get this). Yep, same goes for anime Charizard even though its wings have been simplified a lot The projections at the end of the tail are filled with super-heated fluid that ignite when exposed. I thought it was cool to play around with that concept a bit. I also gave Charizard more lizard-like anatomy on its chest and arms, as it's arms are positioned in an oddly, human-like fashion.

Anyway, as usual here's    all my other realistic Pokémon sketches and interpretations. Which type should I do next? (I've done Dragon, Ghost and Fire type so far).

This was drawn with Photoshop CS5 and a Wacom Cintiq 24 HD tablet in about six hours.

The actual hand component or the entire limb? I think they look fine to me. The joints of the limbs to the torso may need revision one day, though.

The hands. Unless it walks on all fours, then it's hands should look like they're about to clap.

ReneCampbellArt In reply to candelediva [2016-08-11 22:43:11 +0000 UTC]

I actually took inspiration from monitors for the hands, as opposed to theropods (since my early Charmander designs were quadrupedal and it was a nod to that). Pure theropod Charizard designs don't sit well for me. But unlike Arvalis' design, my Charizard isn't fully quadrupedal, so I can see what you're saying.

Having said that, Charizard appears to be rather dexterous in-game/anime and so having more theropod hands (like it was about to clap) seems more awkward and out of character to me. There's a lot of official artwork where Charizard has its hands facing down. As a biologist I can understand that mixing anatomy and physiology for creature design isn't always easy, but I feel it is necessary for some Pokémon designs to better suit their characters.

Ah. Still, the rest of the design's spot on to be honest.

If they ever make a live action Pokemon movie, :I Charizard HAS to look like this 8D

I do however have a few questions :3

1: In your mind, how tall would this Charizard be?  By look of him, I'd say at the very LEAST 7 feet tall :I

My other question would be: Will you do Mega X and Y? :3

As you'd said earlier Y would be thinner I'd imagine while X would have a thicker build (why it has skinny, tiny arms in the canon, I'll never know).

Fantastic work once again.

Really nice work! I definitely like how much more detailed and impressive he looks! I definitely don't see many people define the wings like homolous structures which is a shame because I like to look and think it makes sense. I also like that you kept his eyes blue.

This realistic charizard is by far my favorite. Thank the gods someone got rid of that immense belly and gave him wings fit to fly with. I could never figure how charizard or dragonite could ever fly with tiny wings and a beer gut.

For beeing supposed to be "realistic" there's just too much wrong on that anatomy it simply hurts. If you insinst on teaching "wing anatomy" then do it at last right. That wing doesn't work one inch and the wing-shoulder/arm-shoulder part is so non-functional it hurts just looking at it. The neck is also quite fail. Did he swallow a pillow or what's going on there? Head is okay but overloaded in general (what's the deal anyways with people thinking lizard heads are "misshaped" :/ ). Belly is nice in the lower part but fail in the upper (again what's people's deal with humanoid chests on lizards). The tail is a nice idea... most probably the only thing on this one which is interesting. In your defense though I've not seen a single "realistic charizard" yet which doesn't suck. Most probably because certain designs simply can not be made "realistic" without totally ruining them.

ReneCampbellArt In reply to LordOfDragons [2014-10-13 08:06:57 +0000 UTC]

Using the term 'fail' is a really terrible term when trying to structure your argument; if you insist on giving 'constructive criticism,' then at least do it right. The neck is based on Monitor lizards; since this Charizard has it's head pulled back into an 'S' shape and the loose skin (as is found on Monitors) is bunching up at the front, as an example here (which I used for reference). Head isn't overloaded at all; it pertains typical dragon horns and scales and compared to many real-life animals, these horns are small and simple in comparison. You're probably right about the wing joints on Charizard's torso. However, vertebrate hexapods don't work in the slightest given the necessary ligaments and muscle attachments that would be needed to sustain flight (you don't see hexapod vertebrates in nature, do you?). Of course I'd have to take some liberties to at least make the anatomy there somewhat plausible in a realistic setting. Also, I didn't base the chest on humanoids at all, I actually based it on monitor and dragon lizards once again (as they very often rear up on their hind legs) and also mixed it with theropods to accentuate the strong flight muscles that would be needed to fly (hence the large pectoral muscles that are connected to the wings, and not the arms).

Apparently for 'The Lord of Dragons' and your so called anatomical expertise, your gallery evidently tells me the opposite. As a studying biologist and someone who knows how to reference my animals, your somewhat rude, blatant critique isn't of much help to me.

Too bad Charizard is actually really small. It's only about the size of an adult woman, at the most. This one is *okay* but I like your other ones more. This makes it look like Charizard has four arms, and it's tail is too small and the flame on it looks weird, as well as weak. (Is this Charizard sick or ill?) It's belly isn't big like the real Pokemon and it's arms are too small for it to be realistic. There's no way it could Slash or Fire Punch with arms like that. It's wings need to be MUCH bigger in reality if it could Fly, as this Charizard's wings are way too small to support it's weight. Finally, it's neck is too short.
