Then again, would it end? They didn't say how the world will end, only that the Templar satellite launch was on that day. Maybe the satellite has some sort of piece of Eden in it, and the Templars are going for worldwide domination? (and Assassin extermination?) If the world 'ended' without actually being blown to bits 16 might have still been stuck in the animus. (if it wasn't demolished for being Assassin tech)
