Sura and Muey were so excited to be participating in the summer edition of the Faction Brawl. Both of the girls had been too busy and missed the previous event. But they had agreed early on to make the summer event a priority in their schedules, and help contribute to their faction’s participation. At last, the time had come and the girls stood looking out over the dusky beach, filled with various Tokotas and their handlers, the scene bustling with commotion as members gathered together, proudly displaying their red or blue-colored faction alliances.

The heat of the day had not yet faded, but the sun was beginning to set, casting a rosy glow into the vibrant colors of the sunset as it bathed the landscape in shades of pink, orange and yellow. The colors were reflected across the top of a large tent, positioned in the middle of the beach, where it stood dividing the Pack Leader Faction, adorned in their red gear, and the Prestige Breeder Faction, proudly sporting their blue colors. The two teams mingled at the tent, where judges waited behind a large table set up for the medical response team, whose first concern and priority was the safety of participants – Tokotas and handlers alike. Gear was checked for safety, last minute supplies distributed and refreshments were served for those who had gathered to watch the event.

With their headgears and fins in hand, the girls called out to their Tokotas. Muey was competing with Narq; a gorgeous greying brown dire, with a dark collar and matching barring that stood out in beautiful contrast against her brilliant accents. Sura reached up to pet Tartok, her black dire with a raven dark coat and piercing amber eyes. He could be a bit hot-headed at times, and definitely acted like an alpha, and Sura had to make sure he wasn’t going get into any other trouble with all the other males on the beach. But at the moment he seemed content to be focused on the task at hand, and was paying attention only to Sura, Muey, and his half-sister Narq.

The girls fastened their headgear, making sure the safety lights were properly working, and mounted the dire siblings. They had tried to think of every advantage to improve their contribution to the team’s score – which is why they had decided to apply their swimming fins while mounted, and then let the Tokotas race into the water’s edge with their giant paws, where the girls could easily slide into the water and beginning swimming. Their basket was just behind them now, clearly marked and waiting to be filled with as many brilliantly colored glow sticks as Sura and Muey could find. It was located directly next to one of the blazing torches, which were placed in even increments along the length of the beach and had been lit as soon as the sun began to set.

Sura looked over at Muey and smiled, as Muey tucked a strand of fly-away hair back behind her ear. “We got this,” she said with a cocky grin, and leaned forward to gently grab a hold of Tartok’s dark mane. Tartok shifted in anticipation beneath her, and Narq looked forward expectantly, waiting for the command that would release them. The next few seconds felt like eternity as the silence hung heavily in the air. Sura could practically hear her heart beating.

Fweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet……..

The sharp, shrill sound of the whistle exploded into the evening air as every Tokota and rider that was lined up on the beach made a mad dash, like a crazed cavalry charge, as they headed for the water. The sheer size of the dires allowed them to cover a large amount of ground in just a few footsteps, and just as quickly as they had reached the water line, the dires had already managed to plunge forward into swimming depth water. Sura and Muey slid of their backs, and swam straight towards the center of the cold lake. Narq and Tartok were good swimmers, as they had been practicing intensely for the last month, and kept pace right behind the girls – watching and waiting for the command to begin diving.

The fins definitely helped the girls glide through the water quickly, and soon they had passed the center of the lake and began to approach the opposite side of the perimeter where the diving sticks could be found. They knew that everyone would be inclined to recover the diving sticks near the shore, or even center of the lake, and they hoped that by swimming a greater distance to the opposite side, they would be able to collect a larger amount of sticks with fewer competitors. They were not the only ones with this plan, as they saw there was one of their faction mates right behind them, with the adorable tundra Toki, Snow White, and her red bandana; and just a little farther behind them was Dori, a sweet Toki (and fellow Tsula Tribemate Tokota – but one that was viewed as “the enemy” today as her handler Thienna was a member of the rival Prestige Breeder Faction).

Muey halted, and asked as she began treading water, “What do you think about here?”

“Let’s do it!” Sura replied, taking a quick breath as she used the powerful stroke movement of her arms to help dive straight down towards the rocky bottom.

The water was pretty clear, but dusk was limiting the amount of light that moved to the lake floor, and Sura was grateful for the headlamps that appeared to reflect off the brightly colored diving sticks. Tartok submerged himself as soon as he saw Sura’s head move underwater. He swam effortlessly to the rocky bottom, his thick mane floating around him in the clear lake water, and began to scoop up as many diving sticks as he could fit into his mouth. Narq already had one stick in her mouth and was moving to grab another as Muey dove down into the water again, looking for additional sticks. This was a prime spot and everyone set to work immediately, grabbing as much as they could before swimming back to deposit their rewards in the basket back on shore….
