I’m currently writing my own interpretation of Arthurian legend and thought it would be fun to depict the Chalice of Hope, which is essentially the Holy Grail without religious influences. I’m not against religion (I’m actually a Christian myself) and I understand that at the time the stories were collected Christianity was an immensely important part of daily life. But there is evidence that the tradition of the Holy Grail’s healing powers has its roots in Celtic myth and the church views the Arthurian story about the Grail as a work of fiction. Therefore, I felt it would be more appropriate to exclude the involvement of Jesus Christ and his Crucifixion.

In the original story, the Holy Grail was used by Jesus at the Last Supper. When he was crucified the next day, a Roman soldier pierced his side with a spear, and a follower of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, caught his blood in the cup, giving it miraculous healing powers. Joseph later brought the cup with him to Britain, where upon his death it was lost. Centuries after, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table went on a quest to find the Grail, which was kept in a mysterious castle surrounded by a wasteland and guarded by the Fisher King. Galahad, the son of the famed Sir Lancelot, is the one to successfully recover the relic.

Here the Chalice is pictured as a sketch in a journal kept by a non-religion-affiliated Joseph, who was given the cup by the Faerie Argante. Written beside it is the Chalice Prophecy, related to him another Faerie and the Otherworld queen, Nymue. Joseph also included his emblem in the book, the red seal embossed with the letter J.

As for the entire story of the Chalice of Hope, it would be too long to include here, so I’ve decided that once I get all my ideas completely sorted and on paper, I’ll submit them in a journal so anyone interested can read it. Stay tuned for that!
