Description
Needed a break from super tedious ink crosshatching, so I made this. I always forget how much faster pencil is than ink. At least ink the way I use ink, which is to draw with the finest-tip pen I can buy, and build up layers of shading using countless thousands of pen-strokes. To make a large, detailed illustration like that can feel like a Sisyphean task. Though I'm usually pleased with the results, drawing like that is maddening. On the other end of the spectrum, making a realistic pencil portrait, based on a photo, is kind of a breeze. Not much thinking required, my hands do everything on autopilot. Made this mostly in the course of a single evening, it was a pleasant reprieve from my inking. Made with Faber-Castell Polychromos. Drawing realistically based on a single photo always felt more like an artistic-exercise, than actual art; since there's no imagination required. Just my opinion! Anyway, thanks to anyone who read all my disorganized ramblings. Oh, and thanks toΒ lost-teenager Β for letting me use her photo.Related content

I think it's safe to say that you've exceeded "good at realism."

Most of my life I suppose. Though I got away from it in my early teens. Trying to be more productive in recent years.

You've done such a great job! Her eyes are my favourite part ~ Everytime I look at this piece I get drawn in by her eyes

Thank you thank you, that's very kind! I think the source photo had a very narrow depth-of-field, so her eyes were very in focus, while other parts of her face and her hair were much less in focus. So her eyes ended up having the most detail. Was fun to draw!
