Funny point that fans argued a lot because of the fact Mepholes killed Sonic but if you watch the opening of the game, Shadow the Hedgehog, it clearly looks like Shadow shot Sonic.
I guess someone in Sonic team wanted Sonic to be killed by Shadow or his doobleganger! XD

When I first saw the trailer,I wanted it so bad,but that scene REALY changed my mind(I was a HUGE Sonic far by then,but now I'm just a regular fan of Sonic,and still affraid to see that scene)

i know, and that really is a twist all the way to the space-time rift. and about elise kissing sonic, personally, i pretty much don't find it romantic, mainly because i'm a SonAmy supporter, but i totally figured it was the only way to save sonic so that he, shadow, and silver would be able to defeat solaris.

i wouldn't say that it ruined the series and sonic's reputation, it pretty much puts a one large leap to next generation, as the "'06" bit implies. and it's not just the kiss, but the graphics and plot were part of that. at least that's what i figured.
