Holy crap this is helpful! My friend wants me to do a shoot of her HarlequinΒ cosplay and I've only ever done bare basic portraits and wildlife shoots so this is hella helpful

Thank you for both tutorials! Most of my photos are taken by my little sister, who's a photography aficionado, and she asked me for tips several times. This is really useful for the two of us >o<

Thanks for the awesome tutorial for cosplay photography! I may be a cosplayer as well as a slight photographer, I'll deff. use your advise! would you advise in using a reflector if needed?

Thanks, I'm glad you've found it helpful. If you have one, then yes, there's certainly situations where reflectors are useful.

Yes! I've seen a lot of my shots at conventions and they are so bright from being outside or dark and grainy from the lack of light inside. Thanks again!

Im also a cosplayer and I really want to take pictures of other cosplayers myself, though i am terribly shy so havent done it other than once where the cosplayer got impatient with me after only one picture *sigh*
Hopefully this tutorial will help me to take far better pictures of humans and cosplayers the next time. Thanks a lot for sharing 8DD

I don't know if someone already mentioned this, but I wanted to add it anyway. A great cosplayer can be either ruined or made by their photographer. A front flash point-and-shoot camera captures everything. If you've got a thread loose, or maybe you couldn't get your armor perfectly mirror smooth, the point-and-shoot will capture it. The mobility and control of a DSLR can help camouflage those problems, specifically if you have a flash. If you're still working with the included flash, you're just getting really sweet and clear point-and-shoots.

That said, a person can get fabulous results with the point-and-shoot if they know how to manipulate light. Use what's available and know that it may turn out darker or brighter than you're seeing it. This is where composition comes in. All the great cameras in the world won't take nice pictures if you can't compose a shot (but apparently you'll cover it in the next section lol).

Anyway, tl:dr version. Point-and-shoot flashes can be slightly manipulated. If you place a white credit card, drivers license, or even a business card in front of the flash, one can diffuse the light somewhat. Play with what angle will work best for the shot, but a good rule of thumb is about 45 degrees. Light is either your friend or your greatest enemy.

ack... still tl:dr. sorry... Great tutorial, though. A lot of people need to know this stuff when they're first starting out.

If you don't mind, when you post the next one, I'd like to link your tutorials to the members of our group. These are some great tips and you definitely know what you are talking about!

Oh, thank you! I got a camera and have been playing with it to figure it out before September for NDK, but these tips are more helpful. I will pay attention to the lighting. Problem is, most of the time, the other cosplayers are 'running' from one event to the next in the dark hotel hallways, so your flash idea is the best thing I've ever heard because there isn't much time usually! Thanks your the best!
