Description
Quiet as I might try to be, I guess that all my 12 pounds of glass and cameras and tripods and everything are a bit eye-catching, even for a sleeping lion.African Lion, Sacramento Zoo.
EDIT: Holy wow, a DD. Thanks so much to for the suggestion and to for the feature. It's only 2 in the morning here, and I can safely say you made my day.

Oh my god that's beautiful. I literally gasped when I spotted this in your gallery. I'm not surprised at all you got a DD with this photo. It's really something.Β

Much appreciated. The way these guys' exhibit is set up, you either see the lions way far away, or way up close. It makes detail shots like this fun to try for.Β

Pretty but scary kitty!I love the composition and detail.Β Is that sort of an eyebrow? It looks like the kitty has eyeliner. Great job. Β

Yup, all lions have that little eyebrow thing, but he has a really well-defined one. That and the eyeliner really contribute to his glamour model looks. Glad you like the shot.

I had a really, really long lens with a teleconverter on it to get even closer. Plus, I was only about 10 feet away to begin with.

Thank you. I had to think about how I wanted to compose the shot, so I'm glad the dead-center composition worked out.

Thanks. I've wanted a shot like this for a long time, and while this one still isn't perfect, it's far and away the best one I've gotten so far. Glad you like it.

Thank you very much. I've mentioned it to a few others as well, but I've been trying to get a shot like this for a long time, so it's great to finally have it pretty well taken care of.
Glad you like it.

We got to tour the back area of a zoo when I was in Vet Tech School. There was a lion there with that same look. It simply was full of confidence and felt as though he was looking right through or into us. Unnerving but magnificent. You have caught that here. Doesn't look terribly sleepy to me

robbobert In reply to smilinggoatstudio [2014-03-26 23:25:41 +0000 UTC]
Much like the old Chuck Norris joke, I suspect this lion doesn't sleep -- he waits. Definitely a piercing gaze in any case.
I would love to be able to get behind the scenes at a few zoos. I was able to do it at the San Antonio Zoo as part of a Mammalogy class several years back, so I've seen a few animal off-exhibit (cheetah, okapi, hippos, etc), but I would love to get up close and personal with lions or clouded leopards at some point.
