Description Arround the landfill sites, ravens often compete with bald eagles during the harsh canadian winter. But the last one has priority on the first one when food is available, although the advantage of ravens is their number.

Yukon, Canada.

This photo has been taken remaining in my car, the only way to shoot them without distrurbing.

Great shot! Clearly about the timing there, and you got it. The eagle looks like it attacked right after you took the picture. Nice depth of field as well to make the birds stand out.

Crows and ravens love to harass hawks and eagles don't they. This is a great capture of this type of situation. The look the eagle has is PERFECT.

Oh yes, we could suspect it to be the favourite game of ravens sometimes , when they don't pull on the feathers of the tail of eagle.

Thank you very much.

And wise enough to adapt any kind of situations, including making profit of human activities.

Take care and thank you,

We've got a crow I work with at the zoo, and he is a little smart alec. I saw a raven once when I visited Yellowstone, and I remember him being just shy of my knee tall, but we don't have them out here.

Thank you for your comment,

Sorry that I did not answer your question : at the time of this picture I had a Canon 40D and a zoom that I still have, which is my beloved (if we can talk that way for material things ) Sigma zoom 100-300 mm f4, which is an increadibly sharp lens, sharper than the Canon one, which is unusual if you compare the 2 brands.

Take care and thank you,

Robin-Hugh [2010-07-10 21:50:14 +0000 UTC]

You know, I wanna answer you on that point.

Now, every "good wildlife photographer" has a big lens. The norm become more and more a 500 mm or even a 600 mm, which both cost in between 5000 to 12000 $.

But personnaly, I use a 100-300 mm f/4 Sigma zoom lens which cost about 1200 $ new and if you check it on the web, you can find some arround 500 $.

You have better to know the subjest you take picture of and well planned your shot than having an expensive material.

And I prefer composing with the animal environnement than getting full framed shots usually.
That's my point of view now anyway

Take care !

Favorited!

Those birds impress me so much. I saw one this summer (a young one), but I couldn't take nice pics as I don't have a good quality zoom. This made me sad about not having the money to buy a good lens, but happy of my encounter with an eagle.

A moment I'll remember.

Raven and crows are indeed quite brave, and they regularly attack and drive of hawks and falcons here is California.

So fearless and so strong are their beaks that in the middle ages, there was a weapon named after them that was made to break armor. It was called Bec de Corbun. Raven's beak in english.

ANd there smart too!

You are right, I have seen many times this kind of behaviour,

Like when crows see a great-horned owl in a tree, they will bother it a very noisy way till it leaves.

Or one day, this couple of tiny kestrel falcons, which bravely chased a bald eagle off to the limit of their breeding territory.

Birds are funny !
Thank you,
