Description Auditioning

Requirements for Original Characters:
1. Your character must be an Original Character. It cannot be a fan-character based off an existing story or franchise.
2. The Book and the Twins can access any world, so there is no limitation on what species, time period, or environment your character can come from.
3. Multiple characters may be submitted as a Team.
4. Personality and character depth is valued more than powers and abilities.

How to Apply
Auditions are due May 18th, 2011. Multiple people may work together on a single audition entry. To Audition, post the following two items in your gallery and send the TBOS Host *RobinRone links to both of the following items (in the same Note please!):

1. A character reference sheet that includes:
a) Character Name, Physical description, History, Personality, and Abilities.
b) Who they were chosen by (The Book, Lady Ink, or Mudd) and a description of their Gift (Page, Construct, Function), if they received one.
c) An image of your character (does not have to be drawn by you - see [link] for a list of volunteers willing to illustrate your OC!)
(Examples of character reference sheets: [link] and [link] )

2. An introduction story. This story depicts your character entering the Realm of Stories. They may be sent there by Lady Ink, Mudd, or accidentally pulled into The Book by reading one of its Pages. (See the Cast page if you don't know who these characters are!) There is no genre requirement for the audition. Just create a story that highlights your creativity, ability to characterize, and strengths as a storyteller. You may use any medium or multiple mediums to tell your story, including written work, comic, illustrated story, radio drama, animation, photgraphs, video, etc. If your character is receiving a Function, Construct, or Page, they must be given it in the audition! More information on these gifts here

Judging
Judging criteria for auditions is the same as for entries.
1) Characterization
2) Creativity
3) Storytelling

Entries will be reviewed as they come in. The earlier an entry is submitted, the more time we will have to review it! More information on Judges & Judging Criteria can be found here.

If there are 40 or less entries, the Judges will have 15 days to review them.
If there are 41 to 70 entries, the judges will have 20 days to review them.
If there are 71 or more entries, the judges will have 25 days to review them.

The first round genre will be posted at the close of auditions. Matches will be posted at the end of the judging period.

If you are confused on anything, please take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions !

As long as what you submit has an ending it is considered complete, and you can submit whatever you want. You can also switch media mid-round, and update it whenever you want.

We'll judge based on whatever state your entry is in when we get to it. The judging period will last 20-25 days after May 18th, depending on the final number of applicants. While we'll try to get to everything as quickly as we can, you will probably have at least a day or two after the deadline for us to get to your entry.

Logan-Spartan125 [2011-05-12 21:55:48 +0000 UTC]

now for the character reference sheet, the history can we have a link that leads to an original story?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to Logan-Spartan125 [2011-05-13 00:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Our time is going to be very limited, and we're going to have a lot of material to go through. Unless the original story is fairly short, it would be much better if you could provide a brief summary.

not to sound incredibly obtuse but let me get this straight. this is a contest? Like a writing contest? It probably is but the way this is set up makes me think of an RPG and I'm getting conused in all my creative brain-gasim excitement.

Will everyone who auditions be in the tournament or will there be a selection process? Thank you..again! Sorry :S

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to Duskbyday [2011-04-13 03:59:52 +0000 UTC]

There is a selection process to pair it down to a standard tournament size of either 16, 32, 64, or 128, depending on how many people audition.

OpalRhea [2011-04-05 14:05:32 +0000 UTC]

So if we have pictures previously created for our chars, can we use them? Also if we have pictures of various versions of them, should we link the earlier ones to give a reference point?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to OpalRhea [2011-04-05 19:07:41 +0000 UTC]

The pictures are more for your potential opponent's reference. If you have previous versions, or multiple references, feel free to include them.

is there a way that prevents that

15samurai [2011-04-05 03:16:02 +0000 UTC]

what if the person u ask to draw ur character and possibly ur audition takes ur idea and enters submits the character

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to 15samurai [2011-04-05 03:24:43 +0000 UTC]

In the event that such a thing occurs, please notify the TBOS staff at once. We would contact the other individual, get all sides of the story, and ban the offending party from participating.

In my experience, such a thing is very, very rare. Even if they took the character concept, they would still need to create an introduction story to accompany the stolen OC, which is a lot of work when they could easily make their own.

YummieYami [2011-03-22 00:03:18 +0000 UTC]

One thing I haven't been able to find is how many contestants will actually be chosen. Do you have a set limit of how from the auditions will be chosen, or will it all simply depend on how many auditions the judges think are good enough?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to YummieYami [2011-03-22 00:12:19 +0000 UTC]

It will depend on how many people apply. Since this is a standard tournament, it must be in even increments. The final number will be either 16, 32, 64, or 128. Again, it all depends on how many people try out!

SugarBerry63 [2011-02-23 23:13:16 +0000 UTC]

So we have to say if they were chosen by The Book, Lady Ink, or Mudd? is there a direct storyline to them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to SugarBerry63 [2011-02-24 02:06:17 +0000 UTC]

Could you be a little more specific on what you mean by "direct storyline"?

Each cast pages [link] for Lady Ink, Mudd, and The Book has a History section that summarizes how they got to this point in time.

The introduction story also summarizes events until the present. [link]

There is absolutely no way I can get a drawing out for my characters. is there absolutely no way to get around it? Nothing like, writing out a page or two worth of description for my team?

Is it fair game to say Lady Ink and Mudd would say/do anything to get people to join them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to SkysongMA [2011-02-20 05:11:35 +0000 UTC]

As long as it makes sense for the character. You will be judged on characterization of them as well as your own OC(s).

SkysongMA In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-20 13:21:25 +0000 UTC]

soltree [2011-02-17 02:16:27 +0000 UTC]

Ok one quick question about the constructs, pages, and functions. I've got two characters I want to submit so do they get one of the three each or just one of the three as a pair?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to soltree [2011-02-17 02:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Your choice. As long as none of them gets more than one per character.

irathegreek [2011-02-16 23:37:20 +0000 UTC]

this. is a sign XD
hmmm... is there a limit on how many characters can form a team?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to irathegreek [2011-02-17 00:51:00 +0000 UTC]

As stated in the F.A.Q: [link]

There is no limit on characters, but having more than one or two is not recommended, purely because it is very difficult to manage many characters AND the OCs of your opponents.

irathegreek In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-17 21:06:28 +0000 UTC]

samiikinnss [2011-02-14 10:11:27 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of using two of my OC's, and I was wondering if it was okay if, say, one character received a Function from Mudd and the other recieved a page from the Book? Or is it one gift per entrant?

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

RobinRone In reply to samiikinnss [2011-02-15 14:12:26 +0000 UTC]

I realized my answer was confusing. Yes, you may submit multiple characters, and each character may have a gift.
