So I got invited to visit the deviantArt HQ last week.
Their office took up about half of a floor of an office building. The walls were covered with various art from dA artists. Overall its a pretty cool office to work in.
The main reason I was invited was for their product managers and UI devs to ask me for feedback on the dA website. I basically told them how I used dA, what I liked about it, what I use other social media platforms for, and what I think dA needs to improve upon.
One of my suggestions was for them to help newer users or those users without a lot of followers connect with each other and form social groups. Right now there's not much done to automatically connect people, so newer users or those who've been around but was never able to get a big following feel very alone in the system.
Another feature I want would be for the status updates section in the notifications page to be a stream like twitter. Right now its basically impossible to browse because everything is condensed into little squares with text. I think people would use status updates a lot more if that were to be fixed, and definitely increase the interactions between users.
Finally I told them about catprint (the printing service I use) and told them that I'd consider using dA print shop if they offered prints withs similiar quality, price, and speed as catprints. Especially for international sales.
Do you guys have any suggestions for how dA could be improved? If so please leave a comment and if some things get brought up a lot I'll compose a message and send it over and maybe they'll do something about it

One I suggested a while back was making Daily Deviations searchable. I explained it with two screenshots: Notice that popular all time allows for search, while Daily Deviations does not. All of the listings except Daily Deviations are searchable.

Change the layout and theme colors of the layout. It's out of date and looks out of touch with 21st. Maybe give options to core members to customize the colors on their theme layout of the site.

Optimize the site a bit better, if possible...? Every other site loads just fine on both my computer and my phone, but Deviantart loads at a snail's pace (which is very frustrating when I'm following a ton of people and want to look at and favorite all their art).

How about changing the website's engine for a start.
For example one very new competitive art website which opened only 2 years ago is already light years away ahead in literally everything. That makes you wonder sometimes what the heck.

Unfortunately this one of those things that new sites always have an advantage over. Its incredibly difficult and costly to upgrade to a new system while keeping all the features. Ideally that's what the mobile apps should be doing but it doesn't look like they're really updating that...

That's true. But there is no choice really - it has to be done at some point or the site will die out like an outdated dino, slowly but surely.
Oh and btw I am surprised they still have the same crew and office after company has been sold to a new owner. It makes it look like a prolonged agony to me.
I remember that app you are talking about and also all these stories with rebranding and such.. all that were escalating right before the bankruptcy. And now everything went super quiet.
And the new sites - they seems to never make any mistakes in this regard, in fact they keep integrating new and better features like every 2 weeks (even the ones I never knew were possible, like a personal domain names and sites linked to main site's gallery, multi-submissions, 3d-models viewer, 360 VR paintings, contests and streaming system, blogs, custom page designs layouts, jobs available, magazine and such).

hm.. social groups could have a feed to some of the events that are related to the theme of the group., like for example, me getting a lill notification that a 'megaman-related con is going on here and there, or new news about megaman stuff, so i can quickly click on that and instantly publish it as a group's journal

This isn't completely relevant, but you mentioned catprints? Could I ask about it? How well would they do with artists looking to mass produce their work for comic con and things like that?
I've been looking for a printing company I could work with for that.

They're a US based company, but from what I've seen they're extremely flexible and their prices scale really well with mass printing.

I just checked out the prices, and they're definitely much better than I've seen. Even a free preview before the job is even purchased. There's so many options too. So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing lol Just hoping the quality is what I'm looking for.

It would be great if deviantart had a section to share the art of other users, I think that would help a lot of new users to have their art seen and help to grow as an art community by sharing the works of other artists and not just saving it in the favorites.

If i have any suggestions to give, is basically site bug fixes and a bit more loose NSFW policies.
The most common bugs i have seen are:
-The mobile version have posting comment in the wrong places
-Checking a artist gallery, wanting to comment on the whole gallery, but it constently out loads so you can't reach the comment section without a lot of presistance
-At time for some reason the site breaks and uploading or loading art just does not happen
Also about the NSFW stuff, i follow a lot of such artist and often i get to read about their problems. Often someone with post art that does not show too much skin or anything, but still it gets flagged. Or how artist's get their accounts ban because i guess they drew a Nintendo or Disney princes in a bikini, but dude that post only dick pics, extreme fetish artist and other guideline breakers are untouched. The main issue again being that by all accounts, those banable artist are not actually doing anything against the rules, but because someone "reporting them", they get the shaft!
Which leads to them leaving DA for other sites, and that sucks, since whatever the problems DA is the most social site. Like feedback and artist-fan communication is simple. But again, why stay on a site that is trying to censor you for close to no reason. :/

You can go back on a "page view" mode on option. Then you won't have to scroll all the gallery to access on comment section, you just have to go down the first page!

Reporting seems to be a big issue, either being over zealous and under zealous. Unfortunately this seems to happen with pretty much every other content site where people can upload stuff.
Fixes on web browsing definitely is needed though, some people I can barely load their page despite being on a company like with 50 mbps download and a i7

Sure it happens to every other site, but if you want to make the site better, it has to be fix to a point at least.(like artists that are not even drawing furry art, or even NSFW stuff, are moving to sites like furaffinity since they feel its safer for their works)
