Here's the colored version of the image that goes along with this newspaper article:
Alex's Exploits -- Wednesday, June 17Wednesday, June 17, 1992 Alexandra Whitfield spent much of her time on Wednesday at the Library Town Hall, reading law books and looking up records of Cleminster Groves's past. As always, while she did not dissent from being photographed, Miss Whitfield did not agree to speak with our reporter. It is unknown exactly what she was doing or what information she was looking for. Lacking a statement from Miss Whitfield herself, the Runner spoke with several observers who shared their insights into what Miss Whitfield may have been thinking. “Well, for one thing, she's been doing a lot of research for her summer correspondence course,” Kathy Drexler said. “Beyond that, she's looking for information about the past. She agreed to solve the mystery of the sabotage for us. She may have taken it upon herself to solve the other mysteries of Cleminster Groves, too, even though we haven't asked her to. She might might think it all has something to do with the problems we're having at the inn, but I'm not really sure. She hasn't told me anything about what she's thinking. She's one of those Holmes-type detectives who keep a lot of stuff in her head. Maybe she's trying to figure out who the ghost is that keeps haunting us.” Jemelle “Cookie” Franklin, the cook at Kathy's Lodge, provided a possible insight into Miss Whitfield's sudden interest in the town's history. “I think she wants to make sure who all the legal owners of the inn were, from Cleminster Whitfield down to Miss Drexler. She might think there's a problem with a previous sale, or something. I don't know for sure. But I do know that I heard her on the phone talking with a real estate agent about who handled the deal, or something like that. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. I just happened to be there when she was getting off the phone.” Miss Whitfield refused to offer any explanations for her motivations or insight into her thinking. Amy Lee Peak, the head librarian in town, wanted to keep her correspondence with Miss Whitfield mostly confidential, but she did have this to say: “She was very interested in the geography of the town. She spent a long time looking at maps. She also wanted to know about the family records, but we don't keep those here.” Miss Whitfield's interest in the town's records might explain why she took a trip to Steelville Wednesday afternoon. Walter McClellan, the actual owner of Kathy's Lodge, put it this way: “Nobody knows for sure. She just left, and we didn't know where she was for several hours. When she came back, all she would tell us was that she had gone to Steelville. I don't know any more than that.” When asked whether he was concerned about his special guest's behavior, or that there might be trouble following her during her planned stay in Cleminster Groves, Mr. McClellan said, “Not at all. I trust Alex completely. She knows what she's doing. If she thinks she had a reason to investigate something in Steelville, I'm positive that she's right about that. I don't know how it all connects. I don't know if it all connects. But whatever it is, I'm sure that Alex will figure it out. She's going to solve our mysteries here in Cleminster Groves, mark my words.” More on this as it develops....
Looks like Alex is settling down to do some heavy-duty research in the local library. It also looks like she's not too crazy about the newspaper reporter following her in here. She doesn't want anybody in town to know what she's actually looking for, in case someone tries to stop her from finding it...
