I think you fulfilled the brief perfectly. It's a very reverential take on the character which is what was required.
Your style invokes an art movement that naturally lends itself to an elevation of the subject matter, giving an iconic status, which is perfect for the task at hand.
I'm particularly impressed by the treatment of the shapes behind Captain Canuck. Despite the fact that they do not actual form the Canadian maple leaf, the shapes imply the leaf in a way that is artistic and not literal which is no mean feat.
