Beautiful beautiful depictions of the four beasts of Revelations (not to be confused with the two beasts of the Antichrist and the False Prophet). I've always kind of wondered if God really limited his creations to what he has shown us on earth in terms of design and basis (I still think sometimes that there are many creatures in heaven that are nothing like those on earth) so something like this just makes me wonder.
Well done, all the same.

I admire what you did here. I try to draw epic "alien" angels too but my skill is nowhere near as good as yours. Id like to see more of this

Amazing. To think that they could actually look like this! I am admiring them more. Your sketches truly astonish me and you tingle my senses and my belief on angels.

So...which is the "true form" and which is the "untrue" form? I mean between the amoeba looking things and the animal (and one person) looking things? Also, you said tha these are the judeo-christian angels (really surreal and very cool depictions of them, by the way), but which ones specifically? The four archangels? I can't read the lettering you have as their names (I assume that's either hebrew or arabic)...
Anyways, excellent pics. I find myself very impressed with your work (even if some of it scares the heck out of me )

The true forms are the more alien ones, as the nature of the heavenly plane I assumed to use a different set of "physic" laws than that of the naturel world, its creatures would on time be adapted a a different type of materiality. The more traditional angelical forms that look like animals, ornaments and people are the way they manifest through the human main in an understandable way fit for the persepction of the earthly plane.
And yes, its Hebrew

That's amazing. Are the deities/beasts from any mythologies in particular? They look Mesopotamian or Greek or something...

These things remind me of the Angels from Evangelion. Is that your source of inspiration?

Rodrigo-Vega In reply to tassietyger [2012-01-26 23:06:15 +0000 UTC]
No, I don't think so.. if in the slightliest way, maybe on the elongated proportions of the humanoid. But the main inspiration was Wayne Barlowe's work, shifted towards angels instead of demons and some Mike Mignola for the ornamentation.

I don't understand, what are the creatures on the left supposed to be? I know the ones on the right are the four animals representing the four Evangelists.
π: 0 β©: 1
Rodrigo-Vega In reply to ulyssesbrown5000 [2011-04-10 12:30:20 +0000 UTC]
The creatures of the left are the titular true forms f the creatures to the right as interplanar cratures they evolved according to their own laws of physics and nature into something that doesnΒ΄t look like anything from this world. The images to the right are influentied by humanΒ΄s experience and previous knowledge of animals, ornamentation, etc and were adopted as a more familiar shape.

But these four animals were seen by John in his revelations. They're the four animals that symbolize the four Gospels and their authers.

Rodrigo-Vega In reply to ulyssesbrown5000 [2011-04-10 21:12:39 +0000 UTC]
According to this concept, that was just the shape through which they materialized before John. In the realm of light there are no such thing as oxen and lions and eagles, there is no solid earth for hooves or claws to thread or a weather like earth's to which fur might provide shelter, for there is no mater like we know it. Therefore they have shapes of themseles fit for the heavenly realm.
The wordly forms of angels are just an adaptation, a convenient disguise to fit either the laws of the material universe through which they are seen or the very mind of the observer.

ulyssesbrown5000 In reply to Rodrigo-Vega [2011-04-10 22:13:32 +0000 UTC]
Oooooh, interesting. I did notice that John kept saying "like" a lot; "the first was LIKE a lion, the second was LIKE an ox...". Keep in mind though, each animal represents the way Jesus is portrayed in each Gospel, at least that's what I've deducted.
Human = Reasonable and human-natured.
Lion = Almighty king and ruler.
Ox = Sacrificial and willing to strugle for our sake.
Eagle = Incomprehendable, devine, and from the heavens above.
Anyway, this artwork is beautiful! You should do a whole series on the visions in Revelation.

Rodrigo-Vega In reply to ulyssesbrown5000 [2011-04-11 19:21:49 +0000 UTC]
Exactly, they were LIKE X, W or Z, a man could only descrive such a vision as his best with words that exists and are familiar for other persons that have not seen the creatures to understand. Thats what I did here, the first one has something like wings and claws so it's -like- an eagle, the third one has something that look like horns and is bulky... so it's -like- an ox, and so on.
I also heard that the animals represent the way each apostle preached.. as in Mark was said to be fierce and "roar" like a lion in the way he preached.
So yes, I've been interested in drawing different more unconventional depictions of many strange entities described in the bibe. I noticed that most artist carry a lot of influences from previous artists that build up on people's minds as the "true" appareance of these entities.

ulyssesbrown5000 In reply to Rodrigo-Vega [2011-04-11 20:43:34 +0000 UTC]
Exactly, each Apostle preached a different side of Christ. Matthew for example was directed at the Jews so that's why there was such an emphasis on moral teachings; turn the other cheek as opposed to eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth and how we shouldn't just love our neighbour but our enemies as well.
Go ahead and do Revelation for God's sake! It's filled with with just the kinda stuff you draw!!!....... plenty of dragons O_O lol. This is why I love seeing artists draw something from Revelation, bacause it's one thing to read a description, it's quite another to actually see an artists' rendition of it. Sadly, there aren't too many. I'd love to finally see what a seven headed dragon with ten horns looks like...

There are also more neutral or even bening interpretations of them as forces ultimately from God.. it's kinda complicated, maybe you should read the wikipedia article I thought was very interesting. [link]
But yea, I don't know, I'll be reading more at the time and if I decide to draw them.

The more Earthly versions remind me a bit of the Egyptian gods... Or they definitely have some sort of religious feel to them. The more alien forms are so beautiful... Smooth and simple, but so full of power. It makes me think that the alien-like ones were interpreted by humans to appear more like the animal-like forms... I don't know how to put that into words properly. These are so cool!
