The sign states: Begin Historic Route 66 (more or less). But this location was never the designated start point.

The original Starting point was one block south at the intersection of East Jackson Blvd and South Michigan Ave. In 1937 the starting point moved a half mile east when Jackson Blvd was extended onto reclaimed land, by the lake. I think the issue is that in 1955 Jackson became a one-way street, so no one could travel from the beginning, heading west without breaking some traffic laws.
