Description
I've been torturing this poor piece on and off since November, figured it was high time I finished and moved on.The sketch is even older, so the anatomy and stuff is completely off. Don't mind though, still as in love with the pic as when it first appeared on paper. The mood is just somehow really close to heart

I wonder if you could give the picture some frosting, it doesn't look particularly cold if you ask me, just night-time. Skin tones in the cold are alot more purple too, so maybe that would enhance it.

Didn't even think of that!!
I guess that's what happens when you live somewhere it never snows.
Honestly don't have it in me to fix this up, but I'll keep this in mind for when I'm drawing some thing cold again

Great painting you've done here, I'm really liking that spirit.
Its gotta a kind of avatar-esque look to it but still original at the same time.
For advice the only thing that stands out for me is the lack of colour. It doesn't
ruin the painting but i believe changing the tones of different elements in the painting
can help it 'pop out more'.

Sssssssstormy!
That was actually my second attempt at colour balancing since I usually abuse saturated ones.
Guess I'd better research it even more so my next attempt can be better \*o*/
Thank you for the advice

with colours, a lot of its just about trying new combinations and techniques. I'm sure the
next one will be great.
One general rule that will always help you is to always make the background the
opposite shade of the character. So if you have a character with dark colours, make
sure the background is bright and saturated. if the character is bright make sure the background
is dark.
anyways thats just my newb advice haha.

I suppose?
There's a love of different approaches one could take when it comes to colour
Never heard that one before
WIll have to try it sometime!
I really appreciate yo 'newb advice' mon, it's a good addition to my mental art library

I actually really love this piece! Esp the spirit and how it flows.
Nice touch on the frost breath too! It really goes to show how cold the atmosphere is.
But again, I am in love with the spirit! It's so beautiful. <3

Thanks! I'm really glad you like!
I didn't put as much detail on the critter as I could have, but it still turned out quite likeable.

Oh, pretty! I love the concept of this and I think it's looking really nice as it is. This is hard to critique without going in nitpicking mode I'm afraid.
Since you've been working on it for quite a long time -on and off- I'm guessing you don't want to make any major changes anyway so maybe that's a good thing.
For me personally, the biggest issue I find, is with the crop of the canvas. The crop feels a little awkward to me. I find it hard to pinpoint, but I think giving the left side of the canvas a bit more space would help a lot. The smoke creature is almost touching the edge of the canvas as it is. And with the character's body facing to the left as well, my eye wants to drift out off the canvas on the left side, rather than look at the creatures face.
The S shaped smokey spirit really helps to pull the piece together though -and I love it's design-, but the way it's colored makes the work look a bit flat. If the intensity (brightness) of it had a bit more variation, it would create a bit more depth in the piece.
I love the cell shading on the character, but I'd change the color of the saddle a little bit so it's easier to tell which part belongs to the character and which part doesn't. I also find the furry bit on the character's elbow a bit confusing. It's not a big deal but if I look closer I can't really figure out how that works. Is there fur strapped around her elbow? Or is it part of the bottom trim of her coat that sticks out? OR is it maybe her mitten, which she's wearing on her right hand which is tucked under her arm?
The only thing which I don't like about the background is the darkish glow/edge above the mountains. It feels a bit out of place to me. Otherwise I really like the dark and moody background with a scattered spray of stars ^_^ and I think it compliments the piece well.
I hope any of this helps you ! Great work, again!

Oh wow, this is so detailed and helpful!
nitpicking mode rocks
I was hoping the crop wouldn't be an issue and tried to correct it with the spirit, guess you can't get away with cheating your way out of a badly balanced composition :sigh:
You're so good at noticing the iffy bits though, I didn't even realize the fluff was off! It was supposed to be the fuzzy lining of the saddle, making it a different colour to her coat would be an option I'm guessing.
The dark blue edge was me editing the contrast/brightness of the mountain layer and not noticing it at all. Yet another thing to look out for
Thank you so, so much, again

This is a nice piece. The spirit looks great. It reminds me of the game Never Alone.
