Description This is a panel from a webcomic I do. If you like this, go check it out: I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space!!!

I read a similar tutorial a few months ago, but when I tried it, it didn't work. So I messed around until I found something that worked for me.

If you want to follow along, I put up the elements for the tutorial here .

So, this tutorial requires a bit of pre-existing Photoshop knowledge. The alpha channels are usually the biggest hurdle. But once you figure them out, you'll be using them for everything.

EDIT [February 16th, 2010]: I've been learning a lot more about CMYK as I've been using this technique more and more myself. The red type contains my tips for making this EVEN BETTER!

And because so many people have asked, Photoshop is the only thing I know of that can do this. And it works best the larger the image is. I work at 450dpi, 7" x 10".

EDIT [February 21, 2010]: I recorded a video of myself using this technique! [link]

Thanks for the new style trick. Here's my application: neillustrations.deviantart.com…

I worked too large and my lines were thin enough that it's hard to see the details. I could have made the halftone pixel number a little higher. But I'm still happy with the result.

This tutorial is so much fun, and not at all terrifying after the first few screw-ups in the Channels section. [link]

When I get to the part where I turn all the layers onto multiply, it just turns all the colors grey. D8 What am I doing wrong? I did all the steps right up to that. I didn't deselect the selection or anything. What could cause that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rosalarian In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-03-21 06:29:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm not entirely sure. I've never had that happen to me. :/
You're in CMYK mode, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThirdPotato In reply to rosalarian [2010-03-21 17:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Ja, after a lot of work I finally managed to get it right. XD When it said "don't deselect" I think I was essentially making a M, Y, and C layer all still on the Cyan selection. Also, I found out that you have to turn off the new colored layers as you make them before making a new selection. XD Minor details but they took me hours to figure out. I eventually got it, though the final colors were really light, so I wound up throwing the flats above all of it, lowered the opacity and put it on Linear burn. I finally got this as a result [link] XD it works! THanks a load!

This tutorial is far more comprehensive than the crap I'm learning in digital photography, and we're dealing with alpha channels and masks as well.

I always remember photoshop steps better when there's an explanation why one should follow a specific step.

Grats on the Daily Dev! How long does it actually take you to color one panel like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rosalarian In reply to hrfarrington [2010-02-19 03:55:35 +0000 UTC]

One panel? Maybe 15 minutes. About 45 for a whole page.

hrfarrington In reply to rosalarian [2010-02-19 18:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, that's a lot less time than I thought it would be! I feel like I spend way too much time on each comic page now!

Ben-Anderson [2010-02-13 16:22:30 +0000 UTC]

Is there any way to do this in photoshop elements?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rosalarian In reply to Ben-Anderson [2010-02-13 17:18:09 +0000 UTC]

Nope. It won't run CMYK, and it doesn't have masking abilities or channels. I used to have Elements, but the lack of those 3 things was a big reason I got the full Photoshop.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ben-Anderson In reply to rosalarian [2010-02-13 17:33:19 +0000 UTC]

If only GIMP had CMYK channels (it only has it on the colour selector), then I would be able to do this. Aww well. *shrugs*

Another question, how big was the image in this tutorial? Because I've applied the filter to a 20002 image and the dots came out gigantic on the default settings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rosalarian In reply to Ben-Anderson [2010-02-13 19:44:24 +0000 UTC]

I work at 7x10" at 450dpi, with the dots set to a radius of 8 or 12 pixels, depending on how I want the image to look.

Dagwin [2010-01-24 06:31:47 +0000 UTC]

When I try to pixelate my image, the dots are way too big... anyone know how to fix that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

rosalarian In reply to Dagwin [2010-01-24 15:09:11 +0000 UTC]

What size image are you working with? (Dimensions and resolution)
There is a way to set the dot size when you're in the halftone effects box. The very first thing in there should be the controls for dot size. 8 is the smallest it'll go.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dagwin In reply to rosalarian [2010-01-24 18:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Image size: w = 486, h = 720
Resolution = 72 pixels/inch

Thanks for your quick reply This is my second try using photoshop... I have this ominous feeling I've made a really dumb mistake lol
