Description This is a panel from a webcomic I do. If you like this, go check it out: I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space!!!

I read a similar tutorial a few months ago, but when I tried it, it didn't work. So I messed around until I found something that worked for me.

If you want to follow along, I put up the elements for the tutorial here .

So, this tutorial requires a bit of pre-existing Photoshop knowledge. The alpha channels are usually the biggest hurdle. But once you figure them out, you'll be using them for everything.

EDIT [February 16th, 2010]: I've been learning a lot more about CMYK as I've been using this technique more and more myself. The red type contains my tips for making this EVEN BETTER!

And because so many people have asked, Photoshop is the only thing I know of that can do this. And it works best the larger the image is. I work at 450dpi, 7" x 10".

EDIT [February 21, 2010]: I recorded a video of myself using this technique! [link]

72 dpi is the resolution one uses for computer or television monitors.
This tutorial process is tailored to imitate a print process, which means 300 dpi+.

Don't measure things in pixels. Pixels don't matter so much. Work at at least 6" x 8" at 300dpi, and those dot's start getting real small real quick. But luckily, you can always make the dots bigger at that point.

I follow your webcomic, "Yu+Me", but I do frequently visit your comic mentioned in your description [wow, long title!]. I always wondered how you did this particular effect. Very unique tutorial. It's almost...fun to read it; I been re-reading this tutorial about 10 times now. I thought the process where you generate three prime[ish] colored layers in order to produce the final result was particularly interesting.

I like the use of texture; it's extremely convincing, added with the "bad-alignment" feel!

Great tutorial.

Paragons-Saga [2009-12-23 00:22:45 +0000 UTC]

This is pretty cool. :3 Too bad I won't be able to use it because Photoshop Elements doesn't have the channels feature.

Well, at least that I could find.

rosalarian In reply to Paragons-Saga [2009-12-23 02:24:02 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't. I had Elements for a while, but I began coming up with techniques that required channels and Elements didn't have it, so I buckled down and bought the full thing.

Yeah, that's the bummer. Eventually I'll get the full version, but for now, I can save awesome tutorials (read: favoriting) for reference later, when I do. :3

This is really excellent.

I think the default screen angles for the screen halftone filter might be off a bit, but I don't remember the correct ones off the top of my head. The old angles would give you stronger Moire patterns when the alignment was off.

What's fun to think about is that originally, colorists didn't color, they'd lay down screen on four different separations by hand, which is why you'd end up with oddly colored bits where the colorist missed putting down a piece of screen on one of the masks. That's also why there was such a limited palette - There were a fixed number of combinations of a few different screen densities (The number 56 comes to mind).

rosalarian In reply to Mauser712 [2009-12-23 02:22:44 +0000 UTC]

It's the default screen angles. I never changed 'em.

Mauser712 In reply to rosalarian [2009-12-23 02:44:01 +0000 UTC]

I know, I'm just saying that classic angles are not what PS gives you as the default.

So I looked them up. [link]

Not your fault. Just remembering what I was exposed to when I worked for a company that made printing software.

I bet if you set the screen really coarse, you could get the Roy Lichtenstein effect....

rosalarian In reply to Mauser712 [2009-12-23 14:28:08 +0000 UTC]

I was doing a manual Lichtenstein technique for a while, but got bored with it. Wanted to tighten up the screens a bit.
