So I know I did a little tiny human AU piece a while back with Duke and Smudger but, I realised that if they were both in their youth in the mid 1800's, they'd be dressed quite differently to how they are in that picture.Consider this a tiny little revamp if you will, plus, sideburns are fun to draw, and so are those wacky glasses he has, seriously, the glasses people wore back then were hilarious.

I love sideburns, but that's just me. He looks so majestic with them. I think the glasses are perfect for him! Then again, you could have given him the "stereotypical grandpa glasses"

Thanks! Tbh I just based the glasses off of a tiny bit of research, the style of his glasses probably changed drastically as the years rolled on, he's probably always had appalling eyesight, and due to his connections, he probably got the best types of glasses out there.

Research is an important aspect and a helpful tool! Now if only people did it more. Y'know what I mean? Anyway, yeah, he's probably got the best glasses on all of Sodor, and will always get the best when he needs new ones.

It'll probably be Spencer's siblings though, because some of them might look better with them considering face shape. I dunno, maybe I'll try it on Gordon's siblings. Maybe he'd slap someone with his glove to initiate a duel. Huehuehue

Tbh yes, Smudger can rock many things but I don't think he can rock a moustache, mine couldn't anyway, he'd probably take it off after an hour because of how much it 'itches'.
My Sir Handel on the other hand is just the king of fake facial hair, got a real handlebar moustache going on B).

My Smudger probably couldn't handle a mustache either. He'd be laughing so hard that it would fall off. Because he knows he caused Super Dukio Brothers to happen. It was all a joke that spiraled out of control. And he enjoys every second of it.

Maybe the way that he was a show off was that he could make anyone laugh? And one day management got tired of his jokes and running off the rails, they turned him into a generator? At least, that's what I'll use in Ashes. Because everyone needs a laugh every now and then, and Smudger loves a good laugh, so maybe he shared some jokes? I dunno, just my personal headcanon.

Tbh, I don't think the fandom really thinks about the fact that Duke was young once, and probably wasn't always the goody two shoes know it all we know and love today. I'm looking forward to your take on a young Duke though!

I know right? Skarloey and Rheneas had a whole book about their younger days. Skarloey was a bit of a jerk and Rheneas was more or less the straight man. With Duke, I'm guessing there are some more interesting possibilities taking into account what he was like in the stories. He strikes me as the type of engine who was very "by the book", but probably wasn't as insufferable about it as Duck was about being "Great Western". More like he was trying to live up to his namesake and he had all these younger engines testing his patience.
