Prologue
"What I was, is not what I am." said the 10th Doctor, staring at his younger-self with an almost scrutinizing gaze.

The 5th Doctor looked at him severely. "Are you saying I've changed that much?" he took a breath, "For better, I wonder? Or for worse?"

Doctor Ten took a step back. "Doesn't matter." he said, turning away, "Nothing matters anymore."

"You say that so gravely." muttered Doctor Five, "Tell me, am I ready to die so soon?"

The 10th Doctor looked back with a glare. "Will you quit referring to me using 1st-person pronouns!"

The 5th Doctor snuffed. "Why? We're the same person. Or aren't we? What's happened to 'you'?"

The older Doctor looked suddenly very tired, haggard even, as though the weight of ages had fallen on him. "I've lived too long."

The younger Doctor's eyes widened, the blue of his irises shining with concern. He moved up right beside his brunette incarnation. "What do you mean?? What's happened?"

The 10th Doctor's face creased as he squeezed his eyes shut; wearily he rubbed his forehead. "I don't want to talk about it. Besides, what matters now is," he raised his head and looked to their surroundings, "Figuring out why we're here."

The blond Doctor frowned with unease, before looking around himself. "We're in the main conference room, near the annex to the Matrix."

"Yes," said Doctor Ten, "But more importantly, we're on Gallifrey." He turned, slightly less grave than he'd been the moment before. "The question is, if this is the Past, where is everyone?"

"You know you're right." the 5th Doctor blinked, "Surly they would've noticed us by now. Especially with our close proximity to the Matrix."

The older Doctor looked towards the chamber's double doors, eyes narrowing. "Something's wrong."

Together the Doctors moved, throwing the doors open and stepping out into the adjacent corridor. Only silence greeted them, thick and unwavering. In fact, when the Doctors spoke, they felt compelled to whisper.

"Do you suppose we're in some kind of Time Slip?" queried the younger Doctor.

"I don't know," answered Doctor Ten, his voice hardened by experience, "But we're going to find out."

And together they moved off down the corridor.

In case you weren't able to tell, I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR WHO NOVELIST. *sigh* Does anyone know if they're accepting applicants again?

I like to compare these two at the same age, as they're two of my favorite Doctors.
