He had never seen them, but he knew the sounds of their footsteps, their breathing. He knew what their faces were shaped like, he knew the different lilts of their voices, the changes in tone and what each one meant. He knew their scents by heart, how tall they were compared to him, and each of their personalities, quirks, fears.

But things were fading. He could feel their memories slipping away into the darkness that always surrounded him, gone like his sight. Gone like his parents. He had to ask himself, just how much more did he have to lose? How much more could he take? How much before he couldn't bring himself to care any more, how much until he shut down? It wouldn't take much, Halcyon could feel how close to the edge he was. He clung close to his friends, unbearably close he was sure. Tam and Ophelia had to be saints for dealing with him so far, but the leopard could not help it. His circle had shrunk, his friends disappearing one by one until his childhood group was down to just two: Him and Tam.

But then Tam was gone.

And the darkness was crashing in faster than he could shut it out, flowing through every crack in the walls he had been forced to build up around his heart, until he was drowning, he was suffocating, he was... he was done. He was finished. There was no more left to give, nothing he could use to shut it all out.

Halcyon looked up to the sky, emotion flooding his face, and let it out. He missed them, he missed Tam, he missed the memories and the laughter and the joy.

He was giving up
