Oh! But what brush do you use for said shading of the backgrounds?

Well, its a bit of a customised brush ^^:
Paint shop pro 8, the brush is called *Small bristles hard* set at
Step: 10
Density: 100
Rotation: 0
Density: 100
You can get a similar effect in Paint tool Sai by using a brush set on Spread
