Description Acrylic on canvas - 24" X 24" May, 2009

"UNDERWORLD I" is the first in what I hope will become a series of "UNDERWORLD" paintings. When I use the word "underworld" I am referring to many tiny worlds that exist all around us, and even upon and within us. I am interested in the flora and fauna that live in these tiny worlds "under" our normal field of vision. The things that one must hunt for in the grass, in the pools of water, or even with a microscope. The small worlds of life that exist in abundance, but which we ignore in our ever more self consumed "life styles".

This subject for my work is the obvious evolution of my prior works, such as "CRUSTACEAPODS"( [link] ) and my "MICROBIA" paintings. This one is subtitled "INSECTUS"

This is something that would look awesome as an album cover...ever thought on having your art displayed like that? Related to music?
Btw, your art is simply mindbending/mindblowing.

Again, too much at once for me to comment on. The central predatory cockroach-beast is fantastic, but my favorites here are the little embryonic beings it's attacking.

Microcosms are something I feel constantly aware of, and always wish I was small enough to step into.

Amazing as usual Robert.

I can see the insects that you've drawn inspiration from and everytime I look at this I find something new to study and admire.

I have a hard time commenting on your work sometimes because I'm at a loss for words to describe the amazing complexity of the pieces that you paint. I just sit there looking at them ... my eyes devouring them in a visual buffet.

You must have an outstanding level of patience.
I love the assortment of creatures you create.
You could probably make a book of all the strange life forms you've painted over the years.
That would make an interesting collection.

A delightfully populated 'snapshot' of the insect microcosm.

Spectacular work as usual, Robert and I'm so enthused that an artist I admire is so cognizant of the tiny worlds around us. It occurred to me even as a child that we are surrounded by tiny ecosystems that we rarely think about. When I was much younger, I wanted to learn microscopy, but was bitten by the art bug and although I've left aside a desire to formally study insects or microbes, I am in constant awe of their existence.

I also credit a high school biology teacher for many sleepless nights with his assertion that, "if insects and arachnids were the size of small cats, the human race would be extinct within a month's time."

Thanks for a beautiful, but disturbing view into the world at our feet.

You're welcome, and it IS a sobering thought, isn't it? The world of insects is so incredibly vicious that the lucky ones among us would be torn to pieces and eaten quickly, while the remainder would end up as nicely wrapped bundles to be liquified and digested at a later date.
