To those who haven't read my journal regarding my hiatus and are wondering where the hell this upload came from: www.deviantart.com/ruanly/jour…
Anyway. So, I don't work on art very much anymore, as I explained in the above journal. I've canceled most of my commissions, and will not be taking on new ones. But I decided to fulfill this piece for StupidZombieProd for very specific reasons:
1) She's a white horse with a single easy marking, whereas most subjects have a bunch of markings and fantasy details and such that are far, far more complex and time-consuming. Additionally, a clear and simple reference sheet that doesn't take a lot of interpretation!
2) She has a roached mane, which significantly lowers the amount of time and effort required for this, because hair is hands-down the most painful thing for me to paint. Owwch.
3) This is a mini manip, which is obviously a fraction of the amount of time/effort as a normal one.
I spread the work across a couple weeks, dedicating sporadic spurts of attention, and honestly found it very enjoyable and relieving. So much pent-up art muse! Plus, my pup heads into surgery on Thursday so it was nice to have this creative distraction whenever I got anxious lately.
I've spent the past few years learning how to use a mouse instead of a pen for a majority of my manips - this entire background, for example, is completed entirely via the mouse. I still have to use my pen for painting the body itself and of course the hair, but using the mouse actually doesn't hurt my hand at all, so it's amazing to be able to use it for the bulk of things.
As per usual, the horse is 100% painted by me, with lots of referencing. Boy, did I miss playing with shine!

I'm glad you're doing okay apart from your arthritis. That honestly sucks and I hope that it'll improve or lessen over the years so that you can do the things you've loved doing.

Well either way, I'm happy to see you posting around. Granted I'm not as active as I used to be thanks to my computer breaking on me. Thankfully I'm able to work the next couple of weeks to save up for black Friday so that I can get a new one. Awww... I hope that something can be produced to the point that it will be easily manageable or somewhat manageable or better off than what it currently is. Are you kidding me? Your artwork is always been something to gape at because of how incredibly awesome it is

Ruru, you did the background by HAND? And it didn't hurt? Dang. The trailing sand coming from behind looks so natural. and the background alone feels real but also surreal at the same time. The horse as a whole is just, beautiful, the white contrasting, the shading/highlights, and the hair. Hair is always a pain in manips, I found it to be my weakness xx

I did the whole background with a mouse, aye! I don't know why the mouse doesn't hurt, but for some reason, it simply doesn't. I can't do everything with it because it is very clunky and I can't make straight lines or gentle things with it, but I've learned how to do a significant amount of work with it, and it makes all the difference for me. I'm really glad you seem to perceive the piece the same way I'd hoped it would be - realistic but surreal, that is. And I muchly appreciate the compliment to the sand trail, because that was very difficult for me, and for the compliment toward the horse itself, because I 100% painted that and thus find it to be the most "me" of it all.

We should stay in better contact - I can't do a lot of typing in one sitting, or type in really rapid conversations, because of the arthritis, but I can still hold slow or short-ish conversations, and I'd love to have one with you
