Description
DO NOT ask because I DO NOT know...I started this back in 2015. I had a solid idea then but now, I have no idea. I don't even know if I still have the original image?
I literally forgot about this vehicle until like... last night?

Yeah I did say "don't ask because I don't know".
At the time I had an image and a solid idea but five years later I have no freaking idea what it is anymore.

That actually does sound like a good idea and I think I have an idea of what you mean but do you have an image for reference?

Dude, even quick random scribbles are better then anything I spend months sketching up!

Well that does help a bit. What I do is I get a basic shape of what I want to do. I did practice tracing a lot (I wanted to be a tattooist and tracing is really emphasized there) so I feel that with tracing, I did get better at freehand once I started trying different things. The only problem I have is hands and feet, I can't draw them to save my life, whether I trace or go freehand.
When I sketch things, I do lines in quick little sections so if I mess it up, then a little part of the line gets redone instead of the whole damn thing. I have been practicing with a character I have made up. She's a deity called "Kyala" and she's a humanized lizard (in other words, what some people would call a furry or scalie). This is because she was originally meant to be Gaia and I've always imagined Gaia as a humanized lizard for some reason. But since Mother Earth already exists, I turned Kyala into a water deity, hence why she's always nude and always in water:

That's one pose that took me some practice to master. I had a few references and just combined them together.
The shape thing, I have tried it a few times, but my mind finds it difficult to master. I think it's because my brain works differently to other people's and hence, I see the basic shape right there, I just can't seem to follow with my hands. But one thing I do have in sketching is a massive MASSIVE eye for detail. Like with Kyala, aside from her boobs and vagina, you can see she's adorned with jewellery and bracelets. She wears a choker with a jewel and a heart pendant and her body is covered in freckles and spots.
I understand where that girl is coming from, if I'm happy with something, I'll spend ages with it until I physically cannot do anything more with it. To some, it's just a sketch, to others, it's an image of what is in their head and they want people to see the beauty they see (Like me with my cars, I want you to see what is going on in my head).
And yes, I do have referencing down-pat. That sketch I did of "The Big Nothing" was used from Google, a beach about 40 minutes from where I live, a 3d model of the V8 Interceptor and the video game of Mad Max itself. I use reference anywhere I can find it.
Sorry if my comment seems all over the place, only woke up an hour ago.

Ah, it's all good. Because of the Coronavirus, Australia has begun to shut down too. Only essentials (shops, doctors, service stations, buses, etc) are still running. Everything else is closed until further notice.
I'll be honest, my own mind does hold back. But now I try things and if I absolutely CANNOT make it look right, I try something else. With Kyala, the water is actually her "thing" otherwise I would practice a bit more. But I have other sketches where I practice stuff (Like drawing a girl holding a handgun and a silencer in one hand. Drawn freehand, nailed it first go, but it was dumb luck).
The "Little sections" technique does work for me. Though with bigger parts, say I'm drawing a girl whose topless, I'll sketch her boobs as circles. As boobs come in all shapes and sizes, the circles allow me to alter the size of her bust, whether they're perky or hang down, so forth. I do this when drawing clothes as well (saves a real headache later, I learnt). The details, I add in to draw people's attention away from her boobs so that's not just the main focal point (But it is true that they're there to hide any little mistakes I make along the way but I'm only human).
I'm with you there. I had a dragon girl I did once and I thought to myself "Imma make a human version!". So I practiced and her face looked a little anime with big cartoony eyes but hey, first go. I still have trouble with human faces but I can make a "presentable" one at most. Unlike you, I've never been able to settle for cartoony. When I sketch, I spend time with it until It's not possible to alter it, then I call it finished.
I have been pushing myself (not lately due to work and this Coronavirus bullshit) but I have a book that I draw random things. I recently began sketching a tattoo idea of a hearse with bat wings in place of rear wheels and a large double stacked V8 in the front. It looks shit now but it's because I chose the most impossible angle. Another is a tattoo I wanted of Anubis and Anubis is one tough motherfucker!!
I do like sketching things I see on the internet or whatever. Sadly I can't use the window technique as my window backs onto my Sister's house so I just get a wooden fence with the top of a water tank and her bathroom window. Though I just had an idea to take a photo from inside my car and try and make up some random scenery through the windscreen!
I will take the tip and try to get out and explore more options. I'll see what I can whip up!
