Kind of a moot point given this was completed a while ago but native Barsoomians (people born on Mars) have no navel, their abdomen is smooth.
In the world of Edgar Rice Burroughs martians are hatched from eggs not live-birthed. No live birth = no connection to mother = no umbilical cord = no belly button.Β  Just a F.Y.I.

Lovely sculpt in all other regards.

well, I only Β read the first two books Β of the Carter series . Paying attention to exactly Β the navel issue .
And to my surprise at no point does Edgar mention that detail .
Maybe in the following books he did.

The owner of this sculpt is also of the opinion that the women , or men , have no navel .

I must honestly say , I am not convinced . Reading more Β , maybe / Β but man , a woman without navel Β looses some of its appeal . And for me they come first , from whatever planet they may be . Β

Thank you !

From www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAbout… .... "In the egg there is a cord that attaches the developing embryo to the yolk sac. When the bird hatches, there is a residual scar where the cord used to be. While the bird is a nestling, you can still see what would be the avian equivalent of a belly button. However, as the bird develops, that area becomes more compact and in an adult bird there is virtually nothing to be seen of what once was the scar. So technically baby birds have belly buttons, but unlike the belly buttons of humans, these go away as they grow up."

So, an argument for a navel or at the very least "something" to indicate where it would have been can be made......

I went back and reread A Princess of Mars (they're really short books) and you're right it is not expressly stated in the first book that she lacks a navel.
It is however expressly stated that she like all Martians was hatched so the above reasoning applies once you read/realize that hatched creatures lack this feature(?).

I can't think of any creature hatched of an egg (i.e. snakes, birds) that has a belly button, can you?
Think it goes beyond simple opinion.

Oh?
Perhaps it's the novelty that is unappealing? Like if you are used to internal belly buttons the first time
you see an "outie" external one it looks weird and maybe you don't like it because it's rare among humans.
But, if you saw a whole planet where everyone had outies they would quickly seem normal to you.
Therefore I would say it's not necessarily unappealing as it is just different to our untrained eyes... at first.

Sure thing.

A Princess of Mars, John and Dejah's Daughter. Still too much if one goes according to the books, but great sculpt.
