The frozen conflict between the Directorate and Muskiev has led to a lot of espionage, and consequently a need for internal security. In the Directorate, this is fulfilled by the agents of the Directorate of State Security. A secretive organization that both spies on foreign states and on the Directorate’s own citizens, the DSS’ agents are given a wide breadth of powers to root out enemy influence, arrest or purge traitors, and to ensure that the Supreme Director’s will is enforced.

Agents are often equipped with mind probe rays. Using esoteric electromagnetic spectrometry, the mind probe ray can give the user an insight into the cognitive processes of another being. Although a powerful weapon, the mind probe ray can only take a “fuzzy snapshot” of a being’s mind, and the ray must be carefully calibrated so it works on its target. These weapons are a far cry from the memetic weapons of the Second Empire.
