The architects are a subspecies of humanity, each capable of manipulating one of the four fundamental forces of the universe through a complex connection with the Void. Countless millennia ago, they ruled the galaxy with an iron fist under the First Empire, serving as warrior aristocrats whose ambitions led mankind to great heights. Their fall and persecution by the Second Empire destroyed the architects, reducing those architects that did not flee beyond the Empire's grasp into an order of bodyguards loyal only to the Emperor.
The Order was revived by Vadim the Great during his war of conquest, forging the Third Empire of Man. The tradition of the Order being the Emperor's personal servants have continued, and the Order operates completely independently from every other organ of the Imperial government. Emperors past have used the Order to kill corrupt governors and military leaders, bring to heel rogue intelligence agencies, and even to put the Dondrukov Guard in its place.
The architects of the Order are clones of those originally found by Vadim the Great. Their genes broken beyond the ability of Imperial biotechnology to fix, the architects of the Order are forced to wear bulky armor at all times. This also ensures their loyalty, as the armor is designed to lock and kill the architect within at the Emperor's word. Heavily armored and equipped with a powerful personal energy shield, architects of the Order can withstand fire designed to destroy vehicles.
The architects themselves are gifted with special abilities. Most can manipulate gravity, allowing a skilled architect to crush the lungs of an opponent by making them heavier, or to levitate them. More elite architects are gifted with the power to manipulate electromagnetism, allowing the architect to shut down the equipment - and biological functions - of opponents by modifying the amount of electrons necessary to transmit electrical signals in an object. The most elite, and trusted, architects can manipulate the weak and strong nuclear forces, allowing them to annihilate their opponents by preventing their molecules or atoms from bonding. Of course, the limits of physics means that an architect can only affect the four fundamental forces in small ways; no architect could, for example, annihilate a starship by using only their powers.

it's basically as equidistant from canon SW as SW is from The Star Wars

I presume their powers are also bound by range? And why's gravity the easiest force to master? It's somehow distinct from the three other fundamental forces in a way the others aren't (electromagnetism and the nuclear forces sort of merge at very high energies, while gravity doesn't), and it's the weakest of the forces by an astronomical amount.

I mean I get that it's supposed to parallel the Force in Star Wars, but I'm still curious

It's everyone's favourite villanous character Blacketh Pater.
