Description
Not really a "how to", more like just process pics of a creature. So I was drawing with my son and I told him to give me a scribble. That light yellow is his scribble for me.
Then I just stared at it a bit until I could see some sort of creature shape in there and started laying in shapes and form with the blue.
Then I started with the detail.
Then I spilt water on it.
Which was kinda cool because the ink bled and I was blending it together with my finger. I didn't finish it completely, but this is what I got.

Please allow me to say that you are my new "cool dad" idol. I've got a 16 month old son at home and I can't wait to give him a "scribble assignment" and go crazy with it for him like this. Also, want to thanks you for not dumbing down the monster for him. I don't know how old he is but I refuse to cutesy up monsters for kids. They're supposed to be SCARY and this thing is all kinds of scary/cool. KUDOS SIR!

i forget where i seen the article but this reminds me of that. it was about artist that looked at childrens drawings and then they would redraw them into creatures.
it was pretty cool. as is this.

You lost me at step one... hurr hurr
Nah but seriously, that is pretty awesome. I love how sometimes, within a scribble, monsters emerge from the imagination.

Woah. I've been taking housepets and mutating them into new blends of animals but this looks a lot cooler.
Now I just need to get a kid!

If that first drawing is your son's version of scribbling, something tells me he has the gift too! It looks like a gesture drawing to me. I honestly thought it was your own work until I read the accompanying text!

Very cool.
Have you seen The Monster Engine? [link] Dave DeVries was my painting instructor at Kubert. This is what he's doing now (among other things). The whole "starting with a kid's drawing" got me thinking of it.

I see a lizard, snake, baby bird, walrus and seafood. De-shelled and cooked, of course. Just the seafood. Cause, it would be weird otherwise.
