Emmy and Michael were walking their mounts back from a long day of checking fence lines, chatting as they cooled the horses down. As they got down into the stable yard area, Emmy began scanning the pastures. She saw her young mare, Dream, turned out with another horse that she didn't recognize.
"Who is that?" she asked, pointing at the horse that was standing with her mare. "Turned out with Dream?"
Michael stared for a moment trying to place who it was, but recently they had had several new boarders, including some just staying for a day or two while they traveled for breeding or shows.
"That's Witcher," he said, confused. "But he's a stallion, why would he be turned out with her?"
When they reached the pasture gate, Emmy handed Chance's reins to her boyfriend and went in to check on her mare. She was happily engaged in mutual grooming with the other horse, but walked over to her when she spotted her owner. The mare nickered at Emmy and rubbed her head against her shirt. Emmy gave her a quick once over and she seemed fine. The stallion seemed curious about her, but stood a few feet away.
"Well, she looks alright," said Emmy. "No fighting at the very least."
"Yeah, but what's the chances she's gonna end up in foal?" asked Michael, his arm slung over Dusty's neck. Emmy's face paled slightly.
"Well, I would have preferred to wait, but there's also a good chance she wasn't in heat and nothing happened," she said. "So I guess we just have to keep an eye on her and see."
"Yeah, I guess time will tell," he answered.
"Uh, when is the earliest you can do an ultrasound on a mare?"
"Technically two weeks, but it's better to wait three or four months to be sure," answered Michael. Emmy sighed and patted the mare's neck. "I guess we will have to wait and see."
