That also raises a question I had about Sol. Since he's made of shadow, wouldn't he be able to shrug off most physical injuries? Like, say, a bullet wound to the head?

Yes.
Unless if that bullet was also emitting an illuminating substance of any sort. Direct contact with light sources (i.e. lasers and fire and stuff) will prevent Sol from reforming.
