Hiyas!

This is a pic to introduce my little sub-species of Irkens who live underneath the Asylum on Skitzataos Seven.

They were lost during construction of the giant Asylum, when "earth" quakes caused some problems for the building crews, and were presumed dead. However, they managed to survive, by eating a special type of moss that grows in the caves deep within the planet. Not only this moss, but several types of mushroom and other dark-loving things as well. (And the occasional rat, not indigenous to the planet.)

Warmed by the machines of the Asylum overhead, and protected by the dark caves which go farther down and spread out in all directions -not all of them natural- they managed to make a pretty good life down there. They grew accustomed to the cooler, temperate temperatures, and to the low altitude.

However, the moss that comprises most of their diet has a certain property to it. After a few years of eating it, they began to grow paler, almost glowing white-green, just like the moss. Their eyes also adjusted to the dimness, and adopted a glowing look. Their antenna even turned gray, instead of the usual black.

This was weird enough, but soon something else started happening. They began to be able to read a person's mind when they looked at them. Literally, it would be like looking at a person and instantly knowing who they are, where they've been, and what they're all about. Their personality, past, everything.

As they adapted to life down there, their powers grew until eventually they reached the point that they could look at someone and know all about them. If they wanted to know more, all they had to do was concentrate and look harder.

As the first generation started having children, they found that any new child born had bright red eyes, despite genetics! The children also had heightened psychic abilities, so they used them far more easily than their parents.

A growing population is always hard to maintain, so it's a good thing the Asylum was about the size of New York City! To get paks for their smeets, they had to smuggle them from a hospital section. There were never many children born in the Asylum anyways, but they had to be ready for anything, hence the maternity wards.

The mysterious missing paks from the maternity wards' storage still eludes people to this day.

As construction workers, they were equipped with the plans of the building, as well as the technical, physical, and mechanical skills to build it and keep things running. Things like the generators, which use radiant heat from the planet's core to power the majority of the Asylum, are their jobs. They keep the underground things, along with things like the computer systems and plumbing, from breaking down.

They tend to sneak around the Asylum and fix things if they really need to be done. For instance, if there's a coolant leak, or a wiring problem in a place where the Asylum personnel can't get to, or simply don't notice, they'll sneak in to repair it.

But why did they stay underground?

So you have a point of reference, the topography of the planet is as follows (as stated by its creator):

Skitzataos Seven is a rather small planetoid, like Pluto, and like Pluto it's completely covered in ice with continuous ice storms raging across the planet, only broken up by massive volcanoes and one huge ice-cold ocean that covers about two thirds of the planet.
Seven itself is only about the size of New York City.

With that in mind, let's continue... Why did they stay underground?

At first they did want to escape; desperately so. They tried everything, but the collapse had sent them far down into the caves, and they had to climb back up. After exploring their way around, they found some others who were lost, but still no way up. They made due eating what they could find, and after a couple of weeks their lights gave out. They used the glowing moss to find their way around some, but mostly they would eat it. It tasted good!

They would have made it to the foundation of the Asylum soon enough, but Skitzataos Seven-quakes caused falling rocks, and blocked off cave-routes. It was quite a few months before they finally made it to the foundation, but by that time, the effects of eating so much of that moss was easy to see.

Scared by the new changes, they were hesitant to go up. But they knew they had excellent technology, so they felt somewhat confident they could be cured.

Despite this, the Skitzataos Seven-quakes and tremors made the generators and other equipment and technology fail, so they found themselves constantly fixing things. Realizing that they needed an actual fix, instead of just a quick fix, they drew up new plans and used the planet's own resources to fuel it.

This type of idea was in the original plans, but they dug too far deep into the planet, making it unstable.

Since the planet's core emitted a good amount of heat -enough for them to be warm and the mushrooms, moss, and bug-critters to grow- they decided to use natural vents as steam-pumps, to keep the generator running. After an initial start, the generator could produce its own energy, much like a Perpetual Energy Generator...only it wasn't perpetual.

After they had finally completed the re-vamp of the old generator systems, the S.S.-quakes stopped. But it had been a few years, and they didn't even feel Irken anymore. There was also a chance that the S.S.-quakes could act up again, and they would need to do something to either get everyone off the planet, or fix it again. Either way, it would take at least 50 of them to maintain it easily, and they only had 33 in their group. (Mostly collected from other workers falling down into the caves during the quakes.)

So they all decided to stay down there and keep things running. They have codes for all kinds of things, since they built a lot of the computers (and had to hack/fix most of them) so they can get anything done that they need.

Now, whenever or if ever one of them is caught as they're sneaking around the Asylum fixing things, the only thing they'll say is, "I am Skitzataos Seven!"

For, you see, they are now a part of the planet and Irken Asylum, the old and the new, and they don't fit anywhere else above ground.
