In TLK 3, Uncle Max makes such a big deal about Timon wearing a grass skirt. So what? It's a freakin' grass skirt! I've done a search on Google and seen a few cultures (not just Hawaiian) where the males also wear grass skirts and necklaces made of various flora. It's not just a girl thing.
