"When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we donot see the ones which open for us."
-Alexander Graham Bell
Finally I get around to drawing something in graphite with shading and all! Plus it's Emma, from Victorian Romance Emma!
For those of you out there who like period pieces but have never found an anime with the same effect as a historical drama, then this might be a good series for you if you haven't seen it. I mean, I like other anime that are set in the Victorian Era, but anyone who watches Black Butler for historical accuracy should be punched in the face. Kaoru Mori's works on the other hand not only show the amount of effort put into accuracy, but it looks downright obsessive (and that's coming from me, who can tell if your wearing modern underwear with your flapper outfit just from glancing at you). Even the fact Emma wears glasses is brought up often.
This is pretty similar to style I use when I do caricature-y portraits at the university's art gallery.
I went around the internet looking at old photography from the time period to use as a reference, and I think the final look of her face works well. It was refreshing to draw and shade entirely in graphite. I normally use red pencil for drafting which can be removed easily in Photoshop or covered up in thick layers of Prismacolor, so it's been a while since I've done something like this. Hell, maybe as far back as that drawing I had of Arsene Lupin...
Granted, I upped the highlighting on the glasses, but only that section. The rest is all the power of super-sharp pencils.
Actually, since I'm a perfectionist and wanted a really smooth texture despite the paper toothiness I used a 2H pencil, with a little help from my main mechanical pencils.
But mostly a 2H.
I actually cut myself a few times on the thing.
Like always, comments make me, like the happiest person ever.
Also I listend to The Merry Widow Waltz at least 20 times in a row now.

Thanks
Emma is one of my favorite series even if I did pick it up just for the costume porn.
I wasn't sure how I was going to go about it at first, since I was drawing in a more cartoonish style right beforehand, but it sounds like I made the right choice!

Beautiful portrait. I like this style of exaggeration. Β It allows me to look at a familiar character in a new light.
A friend recommended the anime to me, but given the "romance" in the title, I wasn't planning on watching it. Β Then one day, I couldn't find much that looked interesting on the library's anime shelf, but Emma was right there. So I thought, "Well, I'll give it a try. There's nothing else to watch anyway." Β
I ended up liking the series a lot better than I thought I would. Β Kaoru Mori's attention to period details is very captivating. I'm looking forward to checking out her other work.

It was fun to draw like this. I used to do some cartoony caricature-ish portraits at a small art gallery, but I haven't done any recently and this style is similar to what I would have done.
Yeah, that "Victorian Romance" part of the title is only in translations, and the original is known only as "Emma". (Maybe it would confuse people in the west with the Jane Austen novel? Seems like similar people would read them.)
It was interesting to see how similar the Victorian sense of romance is to the Japanese without using predictable cliches... That and Kaoru Mori basically works herself half to death with costume porn and historical detail. I still need to start reading her current manga, Otoyomegatari, but I've seen her draw some illustrations from it and it's freakin' amazing. (Bonus for the unique setting of 19th century Central Asia.)

Yes, I too amΒ looking forward to checking out Otoyomegatari, when I can clear out some room on my library holds list. Β The costumes look incredible! Β It's quite rare to see a period manga that isn't set in either Europe or East Asia. Β I'm happy that an artist of Mori's caliber has decided to explore that part of the world.
