Description
I thought of dinosaurs living among somewhat futuristic human technology, perhaps an abandoned human settlement. Practicing color and putting down big shapes, not a lot of detail here. Thank you for viewingYou can also find me here:

I'm not good at paleontology but I believe that everything that is long-necked is a sauropod and brontosaurs are a species of sauropods.
Anyway, you're welcome

Love the dinosaur! Also the stark contrast between it and the even larger modern (yet deserted) construction.

I love this idea. You have used some very unusual colors here, it is good, it gives a unique feeling to the picture.

Thanks, I experiment a lot but mostly when it comes to color I return to the same palette, need to break the pattern for the sake of creativity.

Is there a way you choose your colors?

saltytowel In reply to AdriennEcsedi [2014-02-11 14:27:24 +0000 UTC]
Hmm good question.ย
Sometimes it comes down to just knowledge of what color a thing should be (say, fresh earth after the rain should be brown) and I try to find colors that can make this color interesting or just pick a color that's different from those that already exist in the painting because I have knowledge about them. Also, I try to limit my palette - so after a few choices are made I'm done picking colors and it's only pushing stuff around.
Lately I've been experiencing with thumbnails and doing the skies first, the skies give an atmosphere already and sort of sets the color choices for you.

Sounds interesting, I will try a limited palette once. Now that you mentioned the sky I remembered that when I paint something for myself I always start with a generic blue sky. I think I will look out for not always start with that blue.

saltytowel In reply to AdriennEcsedi [2014-02-21 12:23:30 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, it's a good idea. The skies usually set the atmosphere, so pay close attention to this

I am working on a picture right now and the sky turned out to be good but now the distances are not visible clearly (it is a landscape). It is just not good, everything seems too close even though I payed attention to the atmosphere. I am not sure how to fix it.

saltytowel In reply to AdriennEcsedi [2014-03-06 12:09:52 +0000 UTC]
Try to look at it as a thumbnail. Squint if you need. There should be some kind of value difference between the planes. Also try to divide your work like this when you paint, into sections. You know the drill, Background, midground and foreground and what's in between all of those is details mostly.

AdriennEcsedi In reply to saltytowel [2014-03-20 13:55:46 +0000 UTC]
I have finished the picture, I think it turned out okay. I think I will make some practice paintings so I can "see better". I forget to check the values, and that was the problem.

T'is a pretty intriguing concept Perhaps this will happen once humans go extinct?
And your style is pretty nice Kinda like a mix of silhouettes and details, if it makes sense

saltytowel In reply to PictureOnProgress [2014-01-22 14:32:17 +0000 UTC]
Maybe this caused the humans to go extinct
Reviving dinosaurs and relying to much on technology and not on common sense.
Yes, you're correct here. It was just simple silhouettes that I applied some details to. Not enough details in my opinion, will probably revise the drawing later on.
Thanks for the comment!

a real nice piece of work in a paint by numbers style i haven't seen this technique and your imagination is impressive if only i could apply myself like this. i've tried painting but keep falling back on drawing i never seem to finish my paintings i get to a point and stop think and look at it and say, thats nothing like i wanted. oh well, like your work please continue to inspire those who need a good kick to get started

I'm not sure what a paint by numbers style is, can you elaborate please?
Thanks.
Your problem is mostly losing your original vision? Or, not having one and being more prone to the chaos of unguided work?

oh yes the second part i forgot to reply to i understand the vision and the technique its just that the brush seems to be much bigger than a pencil point and have difficulty translating between the different media without practice i have visions that lead me to create stadium sized communities with no one similar giving variety to all patrons to explore the limitless excitement of their realism within a small space the size of a stadium but cant complete the realism's that i cant comprehend within their own comprehension of everyone's situations. in other-words i had a vision but blotted it out with a big brush and tried to correct it making it worse. but i'll just cover it over since i used oil paint and can recreate it when i get back to it. although thank you for your support and hope you have fin with your creations in the future like i always do.

wellย well i just rote a 500 word essay on the subject and deleted it when i tried to copy it i have a two hour lecture on it about the ways i mess up and don't have an undo button to remedy it like i have in Auto CAD or pencil drawing. did you know control x was erase its the first time i did that. anyway in all humbleness i expressed the unwillingness to explain my findings on the subject and removed the x button from my computer. giving you the UT most respect in the works and your accomplishments to your creativity and talent may you surprise everyone with your wisdom in the future with your brush and pallet as you have done and ever shall be yourself.
thanks for your reply and hope you have a prosperous future.

Interesting composition! I like how you put the dinosaur in there and that bridge/platform. The only thing I would work more if I was you, would be the foreground, especially the colors. The eye of the dinosaur is so simple but so effective! Good job on this!

With your studies, have you been pulling photo references or just drawing from imagination?

Mostly imagination but balancing it with photo references too. They're important but I overlook their potential.
