Description
the guy on the left is an old sketch, from like 4-5 years back. it was an old school assignment, to turn a nz myth into a comic character. the new one has no legs because i ran out space on the page. as far as i know, there are several pacific islands with tales about maui. however, the one im most familiar with is the maori legend. heres what i remember.- i can remember him turning into a wood pigeon at some point.
- pissed off the goddess of fire, making fire widely available to man.
- starved his grandmother then taxed her magic jawbone.
- beat the sun into submission with the jawbone, extending the day.
- went fishing, bled all over his magic jawbone and then fished up the north island.
- died like a champion, buried inside the goddess of death, whilst trying to gain immortality for man. what a way to go
as far as the tattoo goes, i wanted something cool, but i really couldnt come up with anything that looked right. everything i drew didnt look maori. i need some reference.

woah hey, this is so funny! I'm doing a pretty identical school assignment right now haha, I have to make an animation for a nz myth, and I'm doing maui & the fire goddess. I feel ya on the whole tattoo design thing- I want him to have a shoulder tattoo design but it's not looking very Maori atm

This is great!
though in all the books I've read, it was his grandfather whose magic jawbone Maui took

I've been drawing Maui for art school recently and I read in a book that he followed his mother down to the under world where he met his Dad and Grandfather, who he tricked into giving him his jawbone.
But then again wikipedia says "ancestress".
So really, I don't know.

Looks great! Although you're right, not very Maori in the tattoo work - more Norse+Aztec, which is a cool combination on its own. A few symmetrical swirls and parallel lines should be all it needs
