Do you know if it's possible to save, so that when you open it, all your previous layers are still there?

Yes, if you save it as a .xcf (which is a GIMP file) or a .psd (Photoshop file) it should save all of your layers as well.

Thanks! Oddly enough, it didn't work with the .psd files, but .xcf works wonders!

Great tutorial! Although personally what I do is copy the finished work onto MS Paint, and save it there. I have the most experience with Paint. XD

This is helpful but... when you save as a jpg format the transparency vanishes and the lineart you colour under goes away so do we really have to save it in the xcf format?....

Well, I've found that saving as jpg can also slowly degenerate your pictures, depending on how many times you save the picture. However, you can keep the lineart in a separate, jpg format file, and then just make it transparent each time you want to work. But I believe that if you are CGing with multiple layers and such it is best to save as xcf.
I hope that answered your question. ._.;;

Thank you~<3 ^0^ Yep, it helps! ^+^ Umm... Also... When you finish your work you want the lineart visible yes? Well if you can't save it then what could you do...? ;_; Screenshot it?

If your lineart disappears after saving, then before saving you could do Image->Flatten Image. Or merge the lineart layer onto the next, and the next.... using Layers->Merge layers. You could also keep your lineart as a separate image, I think, and then put it on after you saved as .jpg.
