Description 2010

Updated with a cleaner look and with my current style of cell-shading (which although it's a longer tutorial, it's actually easier IMO). I'll start trying to answer questions now that I'm frequenting DevART more often, so feel free to ask away!

For those of you who may prefer the older version (which I understand if you do) I've uploaded it to my photobucket for your pleasure. [link]

2006

Aha! Finally I have gotten off my lazy, procrastinating butt and made a Cell-shading tutorial! Fear my cell-shading!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!

Anyway.... this is a tutorial that was kinda requested by Calypso, since she so wants to learn how to cell shade. So I searched for cell-shading tutorials, and found very few (AKA NONE) that went into detail on how they cell-shade. So I made this. I don't know if it's any better, but I hope it helps all the GIMP-users out there!

Examples - where I've used this technique

Thats using the lasso and the paint bucket?
I tried...but it doesnt seem to colour over the other colours.
It seems to go under the colours I've already put on during the first bit and i dont know why

Are you on the right layer? Hmm... I don't really know how to fix something like that.... Let me think about it for a bit.

I'm on the second layer that you showed to leave free and then do the shading on.
trust me to do something weird that no one else would do and mess it up

Okay, um...

Basically you need one different layer for each color you're using. You mask each color to the area you want. Then, choosing the color that you want to cell-shade, you select that layer, making sure to select the actual layer and not the mask. When you are finished cell-shading that color, then you move on to the next color and layer you want to go to.

So what I did in the tutorial is that I wanted to cell-shade the dress (which was a green), so I went to the layer that had the dress's color on it and did all the selecting and cell-shading for the dress on that part. When I wanted to do the hair, I went to the brown layer and cell-shaded the hair. Etc.

Does that explain it better? -is no good at explaining things-

Okay nvm about the RGB layer, I know about that now. But when I try to color, it doesn't work. What's up with that? I did everything you said...I think. D=

This is going to be a stupid question for you, I'm sure. But how do you get it into RGB mode? If I don't do that none of it will seem to work.

You lost me when you went to do the shading. ; I got as far as selecting the part to be shadowed, but when I went to select a color and fill it, it became a shade waay lighter than what I selected. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?

saphiremomo In reply to SailorDingBat [2007-03-17 15:28:38 +0000 UTC]

I've actually never heard of this happening. However, maybe you could use the Dodge/Burn tools instead, and Burn->Midtones or Shadows the area that you want shadowed.

Could the problem be that the Mode for the Fill tool is set on something like Dodge or Soft Light? Make sure it's set to normal before filling. Also, double-check to see if you have the BG color fill. If you have this selected, then your background color in the palette will be filling. Here's a picture to show what I'm talking about -> [link]

I hope that helps.

Very helpful :]
Only problem is that with some more complex sections, it's harder to paint within the lines. The eraser is always handy though. :] Apart from that though, great tut!
