The little Wooper had disappeared as quickly as he had appeared. Maybe he did not understand how someone would cry over a shell. Whatever. Mijou did not need anyone’s pity. Maybe he would go find another shell after all, at least it’d better than…A rustling in the leaves woke Mijou from his dark thoughts. The little Wooper was back, holding something in his mouth. He bounced to Mijou and placed the object at the Oshawott’s feet. It was a small pink seashell.
“Oh. That’s very nice of you, but the shell I’m looking for is not like this.”
The Wooper tilted his head to the side questioningly and went back into the bushes. Mijou stared in disbelief at the empty spot where the Wooper had been standing just seconds ago. Moments later he returned, with another seashell.
Mijou smiled weakly and picked up the seashell. It was cute and round, but it was just an ordinary seashell. “Thanks, but mine was big and flat.”
The Wooper went off once again and brought back yet another seashell, this time a bit bigger than the last and colored yellow. He left it at Mijou’s feet and waited for approval.
“No, mine needs to be much larger, and sharp. It’s okay, you don’t need to…”
Before Mijou could even finish his sentence, the Wooper was heading off again. He sighed. What was up with this guy?
The little one returned with a conch shell with spikes that was barely bigger than the last one.
“Do you understand anything I tell you?” Mijou said exasperatedly. “These are no good! It has to be flat and sharp and much bigger because it’s my scalchop!”
“Upaa?” The Wooper looked confused. Mjiou suddenly felt sorry for shouting at him.
“I’m sorry. I know you meant well. I just don’t think I can find another shell like the one I had. It was unique. Hey, where did you get all those shells so quickly anyways?”
The Wooper’s face lit up. “ Upaa! Upaa upaa upaa!” He bounced ahead, looking back to see if Mijou was following.
“Oh, are you going to take me there?” Mijou walked over to his new friend. “Can you talk normally? I’m Mijou, what’s your name?”
The Wooper flashed a big smile. “Upaa!”
“I don’t understand. Does ‘upaa’ mean something or is that your name?”
“Upaa!”
“Okay, I think I’ll just call you Upaa then.”
“Upaa!”
The Oshawott followed the Wooper out of the forest, at Cobalt Lake’s edge. At first glance, there was nothing special here, but Upaa started rejoicing and jumped into the water.
“Upaa upaa!” he said with a huge smile. Then he disappeared underwater.
Mijou stood on the shore, confused. This guy was hard to follow, he thought. And surely there were no special seashells in this area of the lake. Upaa re-emerged.
“Upaa!!” he shouted with an annoyed look on his face because Mijou had not followed.
Mijou scratched his cheek uncomfortably. “Is there something there?”
He finally dived in too and followed Upaa underwater. The Wooper led him deep under the surface, all the way to a small cave in the wall of the lake. The hole was just big enough for Upaa and Mijou had to squeeze really hard to get in. Surprisingly, there was air inside and a small cove was revealed when they surfaced. There was a tiny beach with soft sand that was covered in hundreds of rainbow-colored sparkly shells.
Mijou marveled at the sight. “Wow! It’s pretty! Is this your secret place?”
Upaa danced happily around.”Upaa! Upaa! Upaa!”

(Though you know what? Oshawott's shells mean there are some non-pokemon animals, at least in the water. Otherwise there would be no molluscs to make the shells!)

True. Although according to Bulbapedia, in the game, there is a book in the Nacrene gym that says that Oshawott's shell grows from its bellybutton. Which I find kinda of gross in a sense. And if they lose it, another one grows.
So it kinda makes my story false. I found that out after deciding to have them find the shell themselves. Oh well.
