Description EDIT:YAY! I TOTALLY FINISHED THIS TUTORIAL. YOU MAY SEE IT HERE: [link]

PREVIEW... It only contains one-point perspective.

If some of you could read what I have so far(it's long T///T) and tell me if I makes sense thus far... cuz I got up early this morning working on it and the more I read it, the more I think it makes no sense at all. It's supposed to contain two-point, three-point, and curvilinear perspective... eventually.

I'll delete this version once I get some feedback...

Gah, it's not even half finished and it's like 2/3 the length of my penciling tutorial XD anyway, off to study art history now T__T

Looks good so far. I think a tutorial on perspective would be most excellent Adding curvilinear would be awesome because that's what most people have problems with comphrehending once you get past 1,2 and 3 point persepctive. My teacher tried to explain 6 point perspective to me adn it just blew right over my head...

Most of what you said I had learned in my high school art classes, but we only covered one-point perspesctive as well xDD;; But it is VERY well executed. Can't wait to see the finished version with two and three point, because I never got a real grasp on those @_@;;;;

This is a very good tutorial! (and by some strange coicidence, I just started perspectives in my art class ) I think you did a very good job but you might want to mention that all vertical lines stay vertical. I know just knowing that helped me out a great deal. I cant wait to read the whole thing!

sashas In reply to illegal-kitty [2007-04-07 20:38:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

Hm, I would have stated that 'vertical lines stay vertical' but the thing is that it's not necessarily true for every situation. For most, yes, but not all. If you take the square or rectangle shape and rotate it a bit, so that it's more of a diamond, the lines along the sides will not be vertical, the lines will be tilted to the same angle as sides of the diamond. So, the 'vertical lines stay vertical' only works for things like upright boxes. So I'd need something broader as a rule.

I think I'll try to clarify the matter in the next part. It's on making lines on the sides of your object. Thanks very much ^___^

I think it's very clear and precise. As some others have said it's good for those who have 0 art experience, but it's also good for the rest of us to see another's explanation. Very well thought, you have also added some elements that most other online tutorials don't add. The length doesn't matter at all, if people find this veeery useful, they'll finish every page of it anyway.

Will you be covering birds eye view and fish eye? I have no trouble in drawing those in blocks, but when it comes to transfering it to humans, that's where my trouble starts

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to CrimsonSilk [2007-04-07 20:08:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you ^^

Yes, I'll be covering fish eye perspective. Though worm's eye and bird's eye perspective are really the other perspectives in disguise--but I'll definitely add them as different ways you can apply perspective. *nod* Thank you for reminding me to do so.

As for using perspective to human beings, I'll be adding that at the end of the tutorial. Uhm, I think that the key thing to remember is that you can build the people out of those block shapes. It's like sculpting. A sculptor will start off will a slab of granite and chip away until the human form is revealed. Start off my making your person out of these blocks--a small block for the head, a large block for the chest, another for the hips, some tall skinny blocks for the arms, eg.--and begin to chip away at those blocks to make the human form.

Wow! This is amazingly thorough *applauds*, especially considering it's not even done yet :0. I think it's great that you've combined art history, geometry, and drawing all into one (and a little bit of sensory psychology too ). Like the person above me says "A lot of people learn [this] in art class at school", but this is incredibly helpful for people like me who can't fit art into their schedules (I probably won't ever get to take a real art course). So thank you very much!

Heheh, they'd never let me sign up for art classes either D: I would always apply and they'd say, sorry no room in your schedule... >< I didn't get to take real art classes until I was like a junior in high school... so yeah, I know how you feel ^^'

I like the way you did not just jump into different perspectives and how to use them or do them, instead you talked about things that are important to all types of persepective(color, size, and placement). I felt like I was reading an actual artbook that was really easy to understand. I also like the fact that you include a hands on example, which really made it interesting and it really emphasized your point(Eye level part). Overall I feel that this was really good and well explained perspective tutorial and I can't wait to read the other parts.

sashas In reply to Kazuki88 [2007-04-07 19:51:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. I wanted to start off with something simple to get the ball rolling, and the idea of perspective is a lot broader than most people think. I'm glad you think it sounds like a real artbook~! As eventually, I'm going to put all of my tutorials together and try to sell them, with discounts for my DA peoples of course.

Oh, and I'm happy you liked the eye level part. I spent forever trying to think of a simple way to explain it XD

Thank you

Very helpful tutorial you've made! The only thing I've noticed.. this is the kind of thing alot of people learn in art class at school. Like, I learned half of this last year, but the other half my teacher didn't learn. Am just guessing that that's the criterion that art teachers in my area (and maybe then some) are required to teach. Other than that.. AMAZING! ^_^;

sashas In reply to Abbyss [2007-04-07 19:45:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yeah, I thought about that when making this. I think that most art teachers would teach most of this, but not everyone is able to take art classes in school. And, art classes in most school weren't tailored to people who want art to be a profession but more for leisure. I actually see people in my college who don't know how to do perspective well at all, and I attend the visual art school O.O so there's nothing wrong with the basics or a refresher of them ^^

Thanks again.

Abbyss In reply to sashas [2007-04-07 20:03:23 +0000 UTC]

That seems kinda strange that college students attending a school for the visual arts still don't/can't do their perspectives very well. oO; But yeah, good point about those who can't manage an art class.. I'm even disappointed I didnt start taking regular Art one year earlier so I could have three years of Art class instead of two. >>;

sashas In reply to Abbyss [2007-04-07 20:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't know why they don't know it. I suppose, they use grids a lot, which is not really a cognitive process, I mean you don't have to think the needs to be here, this line goes in the direction... you kinda just... copy it, square by square. So I suppose they don't really think about what's going on in the image or what is going on with perspective. >>;

Thank you so much.

This is what every beginner's art class should include. My years in high school art was wasted as my teachers never explained it anywhere as well (instead I had lots of "draw this one line perspective thing and I won't explain why you do it").

Thank you so much. You sure how now to explain things well.

I'm glad you enjoy my explanation. I spend a good while trying to reword my sentences for clarity, though you never know if things are clear until the audience tells you their thoughts.

Nice! It's great thus far, I must say, and very helpful. It was a great reminder of the things I'd learned in grade 9 and 10 art, and it was much more elaborate than my teacher had ever shown us.

Oh, I'm glad that you thought it was helpful.There is a lot of things that people seem to just skim over when teaching perspective. It seems to mostly be the step by step method of teaching without any explanation of anything ^^'

Yes, I felt I had to go through with completing it. As after a poll, 30% of people wanted the perspective tutorial to be completed first.

Somnambulist-theory In reply to sashas [2007-04-07 20:01:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm practising movement, perspective, and putting life into my art. Perspective is one of the major areas. Movement will probably come after perspective, and the two together help create a sense of life.
I really can't wait to add this to my personal list of 'helpful tutorials', and I'm glad to see some more of your works in my inbox. :3
