Description
The name of this bird is a bit tricky if you compare it's English name to the Dutch word. The sparrowhawk is called such because it hunts down sparrows (among other birds), right? In Dutch we call it a sperwer, coming from spreeuwenarend, which literally translates to starling-eagle. Right. Starling instead of sparrow.Sparrowhawks eat both, by the way, but it's mostly the bigger female that eats starlings and the smaller male eats sparrows.
That's it for our Biology lesson today

A very interesting lesson, indeed. And an even better drawing/painting... pastel? Excellent detail on those legs and talons!

Thank you! It is indeed pastel, but also watercolor pencils and some white gouache. I love to work with mixed media.

aha!
i knew it!
there was no way that i would mistake the bronze pattern on its belly
a ''slechtvalk'' looks a bit like it but has those black marks under its eyes
plus its belly has black stripes
beautifully drawn~~

Thank you! I haven't noticed the similarity to the peregrine until you mentioned, but yes! Sparrowhawks also have much longer legs, though. To the point it starts to look funny sometimes.

[this is a bald eagle in particular. y'know, american eagle
in dutch that would be ''amerikaanse zeearend''
that's why ours looks somewhat like his cousin

but then they used the blend brush]

Oh yes, I've seen that puffball around too.
But what do you mean with the blend brush? That 'our' eagle isn't a puffball?

Marl1nde In reply to Saskle [2016-12-17 18:28:30 +0000 UTC]
yeah, such nice puffballs
well, no
when you campare the two eagles there is a clear difference between the two
The american eagle has a clear ''line'' betweeen the brown and white
the european eagle has a more...
well, it's more subtle
so it's like someone used a blend brush with the white and brown
in that sense...
hope that makes sense, hahaha
