FOR PHOENIX DETAIL GO HERE-->[link] (this is a much more accurate representation of the work, it is sharp and correctly colored).Watercolor background+prismacolor pencil dream landscaping and prismacolor phoenix.
The phoenix is a representation of myself, as far as astrology goes, I'm scorpio rising- your rising sing reflects your outerself, the first things that people notice when they first meet you, how you look, your general, possibly superficial personality. Scorpio is often depicted as a Scorpion, but it is also symbolized by the phoenix. Phoenix rising...
I have spent nearly a month working on and thinking about this peice. I spent several days researching phoenixes. Some form of phoenix or another appears in nearly every mythology world wide. I studied the design of each bird and when the time came to design my own I used these images as guides to flesh out the details.

Ahahaha! This is bodacious. I really like the texturing effect on the right side of the image, and the symbolism inherent (or suspected, at least ) in the phoenix's flight into the night. Excellent work!

Thank you very much! The symbolism was, indeed, intended- I'm glad you picked up on it.

Gorgeous composition! I love the rainbow colors -- it's bright and bold and saturated without seeming overdone.

I think I am in love! wonderful piece, and the meaning behind it. I myself am a scorpio rising, and in love with the phoenix yet I did not know about it being seen that way. Very cool.

Oh my goodness! I am so excited to have found your comment in my mailbox! I was in quite a hurry and had no intention of answering any of my messages (it's rather late here and I am on my way to doing something else) but then I saw your user name and I simply had to read this. I looked at your gallery briefly and was thrilled to see your phoenix art. We seem to have a unique similarity of interest which absolutely warrants a +friend watch thingy. I shall look at your gallery in more detail soon when I have cleared some of the things from my plate.

Aww thanks for the kind words. I really need to work on some more phoenix paintings, my gallery is rather small at best, but I do try. I'll +friend you back because I love your art it's so pretty!

Not only am I impressed with the picture, the colors and design are amazing, but with the research you did to draw this picture. All around it's beautiful and obviously meaningful.

Thank you! The research was really very satisfying. I think that I enjoyed creating this piece above all my others because of that research. My little phoenix is becoming a bit of a signature. I've put her in several other drawings recently but I have not spent nearly as much time on those as I did this one. I'm really happy that someone recognized the value that research gave this piece.

Yes. I don't think I'll be doing this forum thin again, but it is interesting, just too time consuming. Every now and again I find good work like yours which makes it worth it

Yeah, I would have trouble doing a forum, when I like something, I get so interested that I must write the person a lengthy comment and look at their gallery and write them more lengthy comments in response to other pieces that I find in their gallery and am interested in... it's rather exhausting. But then if I didn't like someones work I would feel obliged to give them constructive criticism or something. Then I would fall into a pit of tiredness and resort to roboticism... and then the little newbies with low self esteem would begin to cringe and whither away in fright. I shall never moderate my own thumbshare forum.

Probably a good Idea not doing the thumbshare forum thang. One of the reasons I did it is to pry open my small mind, beyond Surreal & Fantastic art. I really did appreciate and get inspired by many forms of art in this process, but never again. Lol

Wooooooow. The colors are very well chosen. I like the way you used cold colors on the right and warm colors on the left. Since you made the phoenix so detailed, it really POPS out of the picture and makes me focus on it.
Keep up the good work!

This is a really great piece.
I'm not easily impressed by art in general, my thoughts are usually along the lines of "thats nice, I guess" But this is one of the VERY few deviations that I've thought were really interesting to look at, both because of the actual composition, color scheme, etc (I saw the other version of this painting with just the phoenix and I have to say I like this one better) and because of the array of techniques, especially since my main medium is watercolors. Are those watercolor pencils, and if not, how did you get that blurry look on those membrane-ey parts? I don't know much about colored pencils. :/

Sasky In reply to Beebee23 [2006-06-01 05:13:41 +0000 UTC]
First I would like to say- Thank you very, very much. I am, still developing as an artist and I have had next to no technical training so I was a bit wary of posting on thumbshare. I really appreciate your comment.
Also-- the other painting that shows only the phoenix is just a detail of the larger one, it obviously doesn't have a very great composition, but it does show of the detail of the bird (which I am quite proud of) in a way that the larger picture cannot. You kind of have to take both of the pictures together.
The colored pictures on the phoenix are prismacolors, they are very waxy colored pencils... not the best that money can buy, but my personal favorites (because they are so waxy and easy to blend). Some of the watercolor background is "enhanced" with the same pencils. I'm really glad you like it!

Ooh, that's a very nice picture I'm a scorpio too, didn't know phoenixis were there along with us though
I like how it lights up the area where it is and that you can see the darkness ahead. Good job!
