Description
I'm working on the next page (which is almost done!!), and decided to take a break to upload this. It's the basic process of how I make my pages, highlighting this one panel from my last page (Vol 1, Page 4 if I have others uploaded since uploading this). I don't do these much so I hope it doesn't suckEverything is done in Adobe Photoshop CC with my Wacom Intuos Pro
~~~~~~~~
1. My sketch. I start everything on paper. I find it easier for me to sketch up ideas on paper. Then I scan it in. I adjust things with the lasso tool if things seem to big or are not in the right place Also has some original dialogue in it, that I clearly change at times
2. I make the lineart. This is where the details get added. Also, my most hated part of the process, and takes me the longest. I add and adjust my dialogue a little after the lineart is done, reading through previous pages to make sure it sounds alright and fits.
3. I decide the values of everything in in the panel, or colour pick them from the previous page/panel if the lighting/scene is the same. I also greyscale the file at this point so I don't accidentally add colour to it. I purposefully make each character/value it's own layer for a later step.
4. I add the shadows and highlights as needed, just colour picking and making the grey lighter or darker as needed. My favourite part of the process.
5. Colouring. I colourize my file. I use the Colour Layer mode to add the colours to the scene. I copy the grey base layer (of say, Igneous,) and move it up the layer order. I then create a clipping mask on that layer and fill it with Igneous's swatch colour. It saves me a crap-load of colour time. Once this is done and I am happy, I merge the grey layers down to one and will paint the shadow colours in if needed. I did so with blue under the barrel only. I didn't feel the need to spend the time doing it for all of this panel. I will do coloured shadows more with strong light/specially lit scenes.
6. Not really shown here, but I spend some time, sometimes up to half a day, adjusting dialogue to make sure it sounds right and fits in.
That's about it.
Not sure how others do it, but this works for me. I work in grey scale because I find my colours come out more vibrant.
Interesting, I have to try this technique!
I spent a lot to coloring, and often I like doing different version of an art (b&w, pattern and color)
Maybe preparing the shading with grey helps me to speed up
Thanks for sharing!
More layering that I don't get.
Honestly I just do everything in like two layers nowadays. One for most pf my career, lol. I guess I'm weird in that respect.
I wish I could do everything in less layers. It would be easier to manage. I learned it this way and can't seem to let it go
How do you do that tho? Y'know...make it come out like it's colored? Do you switch back and forth between colored and gray?
It really confused me too until I tried it. I paint over the grey layer on new layers that I have put to "Color" mode.
I just started doing it this way with my first comic page. I looked up some tutorials and it kinda scared me. Now, after doing 5 pages like this (I'll be posting the next page today), I wouldn't do it any other way.
Ooh, so you put the shading before the colours! I should try that! It's very interesting!
Is it how we obtain harmonious colours that fit each other well? I struggle with that a lot.
I like it this way, because I can be sure that all of the shades and values contrast nicely, and don't mud together.
