Description
Inspired by the ingenious carving work of Don Simpson [link] [link] , I broke out the ol' Dremel tool and had a go at reverse-carving on clear acrylic plastic. So far, it has yielded some amazing results. This piece is 4.5 inches by 5.5 inches and 3/8 of an inch thick. Approx two hours of freehand carving with about nine different bit styles.

wow! this is so nicely done!
Do you find that carving in this stuff makes a pretty smelly odour? I have to just cut break lines into it sometimes, and the smell is awful!!

savageworlds In reply to Handie [2009-02-26 06:50:25 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! As to aroma, it seems that 'odor is in the nose of the inhaler'. I find the smell of acrylic plastic to be a 'sweet' smell as compared to styrene or polycarbonate, but others do find it noisome.

Yeah, I suppose that if you are going to compare toxic smells, then Plexi might not be as bad as the rest

I will be sure to mention that to my neighbors. I was cutting plex with my laser last week (the exhaust vents out into the space between our houses), and they called the fire department with claims of a clandestine meth lab. The firemen were very understanding once I showed them the equipment, but it made for an interesting evening.

OMG! that's not funny - but it IS funny! So did they storm in with haz-mat gear on, or did they just knock on your door and say "'scuze me sir??" LOL!!
So did you go over and tell your neighbours to come on over and see what you do over there, or did you flip them the bird and tell them to mind their own business?! LOL!

savageworlds In reply to Handie [2009-02-27 22:38:45 +0000 UTC]
No haz-mat gear, but they were quite eager to see the equipment and verify its safety. I actually ended up passing out business cards (laser-etched on formica laminate).
I haven't spoken to the neighbors yet. Thought I'd send them a thank-you card... and suggest that they invite the cops and the local tv news station next time. LOL

LOL! now there's a true business man - passing out business cards at the brink of getting busted!
I'm surprised the police didn't show up as well, because around here, if a fire dept is called for something like that - the police have to go first and clear the area for them just in case the people are violent (in the case of a real meth lab!)

Maybe it was their first lab investigation (Noobs! LOL) I was a bit unprepared myself, though. Next time I'll be sure to have some canapes and little finger-sandwiches on hand.

Sorry, Kat, I forgot to post the results (I do have some pics of the other cars, too.)
Not the fastest of the forty entries, My car took 18th place in the final speed ranking.
On appearance and design, though, I captured 2nd place in each category. Many of the other entrants thought my car should have taken top honors, but the competition was fierce. The 1st place winner built a replica of one of our sign-installation vehicles (a truck with a telescoping boom on the back. His truck also had working headlights, toolboxes, and a watercooler.
All in all, it was a fun experience for everyone.

Nice; I'd have never guessed you were just starting to use this method. Good job of fitting the bit styles to the subject matter, too.

Thanks! It was actually more 'happy accident' than conscious intent. After two or three bit changes, the underwater look just seemed to pop out. I just hope it was not All 'beginner's luck'
