Description
Edit: I've got several comments of people who are wondering how they can't install their patterns. I resolved every problem and that's ALWAYS because people forget something, because if you follow every step, then it works 100% everytime ^^
If you're planning to ask me why you can't use your pattern please check this :

- your file has to be a .bmp file;
- it should have the size 512x512 px;
- it must keep transparency, for exemple a .jpeg (that turns transparency into white areas) turned into a .bmp file won't work because the transparency already has been deleted;
- your file must be in grayscale mode (a rgb file turned into black&white isn't a grayscale file! ^^)

If you follow those steps, there's not a single reason your pattern won't show!

But if you still don't succeed to install it, don't hesitate to show me your pattern in the comments and I'll tell you what's wrong ^^

If you don't know what transparency is, check this out:  sta.sh/01w1mzfguufp -> sta.sh/01mw2b623lhm

Last summer, I searched how to install patterns on SAI, because I don't really like to use it with photoshop... So now, here is a tutorial on how I do this, I hope it would help

Download for full view and have fun

Edit : RGB can also be turned into Grayscale by using the Gimp (free software), just choose image -> mode -> Grayscale

for me, it says my start-sai has error and cant run D:
but this is SO MUCH simpler than me trying to figure it out myself and end up wanting to strangle sai :')

thank you!

My problem would be that my SAI is the one that has weird names in the options D: do you have a link that can take me with the english version? Please~~?

The only thing you have to do is to search for an english patch for sai on the internet and to download it. I don't know where to find one, but google may help you ^^

I did this and it didn't work. When I went to the settings for the pen tool, the pattern I wanted to use wasn't there.

Sayuki-Art In reply to bloobalooby [2012-01-15 10:11:29 +0000 UTC]

This works all the time ^^ If not, it's because there are many steps that are ALL essential check out if your file is on the grayscale mode (if it's RVB in black and white it won't work), if it's 512X512 px, if it's a .bmp file, if you correctly put it in the blotmap folder and if you opened sai with "start-sai.exe" and not "sai.exe" for the first use. If it don't works, it's because something is missing ^^
Hope it helps.

Won't work for me öÖ
It's too big D:
I wanna use the pattern in a small piece of my work E__E But it doesn't work T__T

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sayuki-Art In reply to Furuha [2011-12-29 10:20:20 +0000 UTC]

Actually if you resize it and follow all the steps, it really works, but if you want to cover just a small piece of your work then do like that
-fill the area in white or whatever you want in a new layer
-open the pattern in sai, cut and paste it in your work
-take the layer of the pattern and put it above the layer you just have filled
-tick "layer clip" (or something like that, I've got the french version of sai, it's next to "lock opacity" ^^') for the pattern layer
-then it's done, and this way you can move the pattern as you want

Tell me if something works wrong

Once its grayscale on Gimp, what you do next?
I save it as a png file and when i am going to open it on sai, it appears green D:
please help!!
(i am sure the white areas are transparent )
In which file should i save it to open with SAI later and do the re-size and bitmap thingy ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sayuki-Art In reply to Estella-Sparkles [2011-10-16 16:00:50 +0000 UTC]

That's all indicate in my tutorial, just read the steps...
First, that's not a png file but a bmp file ^^
Second, you don't have to open it on sai, but to save it in the blotmap folder of sai installation folder!
So, when you change it into grayscale in the Gimp, save it as a bmp file and save it in the blotmap folder. Then you'll have to open the "start-sai.exe" which is in the sai installation folder

Sayuki-Art In reply to Sayuki-Art [2011-10-16 16:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh and also don't forget to resize it before you save it in the folder

Estella-Sparkles In reply to Sayuki-Art [2011-10-16 19:58:41 +0000 UTC]

I am having problems with Gimp (maybe i am just stupid i dunno)
Every time i save it on bmp, gimp says "alpha channel will be ignored" and doesn't gives me any other option. When i press ok, the image comes out completely black.

I manege to get one right. When it did, it gave me the "export option" instead of saving. But it doesn't give me that option anymore. I am such a fail
what should i do?

Its really kind of you! rly!
But actually they are all Gimei's patterns too.
So you probably have them already done.
The point is i wanted to learn so i can do it by myself and not to rely on people u_u (don't want to bother you each time D: )
But thank you anyways, is really kind and generous of you for lending me help ^^
i downloaded a few :/
Thank you again

Sayuki-Art In reply to Estella-Sparkles [2011-10-17 16:35:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok I see ^^ Hm I searched other softwares to convert RGB into grayscale, but I only find the adobe photoshop serie... maybe you could find it on the internet, because it seems that your Gimp does not work very well :/ And if you don't find one, you can download, for exemple, the trial version of adobe photoshop elements which can do this easily

Its okay It most be me who is being dumb xD
If i did it once (actually just saw i made two) then it most be something i am not doing as i did before xD
maybe eventually i'll figure it out. But your tutorial is very helpful! now i know its possible and downloaded some for sai
I have photoshop but i dunno how o use it

Sayuki-Art In reply to Estella-Sparkles [2011-10-18 05:15:26 +0000 UTC]

If you have photohop that's alright just open your image and go to image -> mode -> grayscale, then to resize it that's image -> image size, an then save it as a bmp (we'll succeed )
photoshop is a little bit hard at first, but there is so many tutorials on how to use it on DA actually I use it only when I want to add some finishes on my drawings, but I don't use it for painting anything ^^
