Description **This edition of Scalawags for DA's Film Gallery Premiere**

We had the wonderful opportunity to work alongside a handful of talented graduating music majors from USC the past winter, and as a result Scalawags now has its own beautiful score composed by David Stanton. This makes Scalawags a completely original piece, ready for film festivals!

*****************

From concept to completion this project took us 11 weeks to produce. We spent four weeks in pre-production and five weeks animating and compositing. One week at the end to enjoy our pizza and watch the movie.
. . .And maybe do some post audio work.

***Please visit our journal for more information regarding the production, and learn what software and techniques were used in the creation of this film.***

Incredible work by the Scalawags crew!

You got me fooled that it was all the group of kid's immagination!

The characters were full of live and well animated, the music scored beautifully and the direction and flow of the film was smooth-like entertaining. Keep up the awesome stuff guys! *thumbs up*

Haha. That makes me feel really happy. ^ ^ At first I was like, "Noo, he didn't do it!" But then I thought, "Yay! Cookies and an ironing board!"

Fantastic. ^ ^

Nice one. Its good to see children using their imaginations. It seems that this gen has gotten away from that. This is a nice short.

I also like this transition right here. I think that the palette choice is a nice touch here as well. The pirate world is all vibrant colors and it contrasts well with the "drab" reality.

I'm just not sure about the child masquerading as Kenny from South Park. It wasn't very subtle.

All told, this is an excellent piece. Well animated, great humour and excellent transitions. The abrupt shift in the focus of their imaginings is one hundred percent kid. Right on the money!

Great choice of timing to switch to the "real world" there. I like that he's using not just part of the coat-hanger, but the WHOLE coat hanger for his hook.

This is very very nice. I kept thinking 'Monkey Island 3' the whole time and I honestly think that is where some of the artwork got its inspiration from, at least.

The story was very entertaining. I loved the big guy being totally unaware of what's going on in the beginning. The animation rocks as well - still reminds me of MI3 though.

I give it a 7/11 - (a good score).

AgaetisByrjun32 [2007-09-29 13:24:39 +0000 UTC]

This is really well done and polished. The 'look' is what really makes this, plus the killer score. My only complaint would be that pacing felt a bit slow at times, the whole thing would have benefited from being a touch snappier. It felt a little weak in the sound effects department too... adding some foley would greatly improve the cohesion of the piece.

Great little short though, simple and looks amazing. Good luck at the festivals.

I thought this was a great project. I loved the connections between the fantasy world and the real world. The pale, sober colors worked very well for the mood of the film, and all the voices fitted the characters perfectly.
