Besides, he's not saying directly that the project was cancelled, because the literal translation would be "Ese proyecto fue cancelado".

Actually "That project was canceled" or "We don't have to do that project anymore" would sound a bit more natural to me. To be honest, at first I thought "That project doesn't have to be done now" sounded like it meant that it didn't have to be done right this moment, but was maybe moved to a later time. Which did confused me a bit.

It depends on what exactly are you aiming for, he mostly asks for direct translations, so the "meaning" of it can be lost.
Like I said, I did 2 translations, this one, that I also don't like a lot x'D
And another one that sounds a bit more "natural", using more slangs and such.
