Description
How to sew by hand! (Using a simple backstitch)Several people have been asking me to post some tutorials on plushie making, but I thought "what about those without sewing machines?" At any rate, learning to sew by hand is a skill you will need to make plushies, whether you have a sewing machine or not.
For toys and clothes, it is not sufficient to use a running stitch, or else it's too easy to pull the thread, and the fabric will bunch up like a curtain. Also you won't be able to make a strong seam with a running stitch. The stitch you can learn in this tutorial is strong. It's basically how people made clothes and things before sewing machines were even invented! Tried and true!

I just gave this a shot, while adding a technique I conjured myself (just doublebacking over the line for double strength)... It works! I'll be making good use of this for my Halloween outfit (since I have to make the hood myself... I'm thinking that I should make the shirt instead of using this one that I bought)! Once again, thank you so much for creating this tutorial. It seriously deserves a Daily Deviation! >:U

This should help me. I can only hand sew things and I am not that good yet. I have only fixed toys, clothes, and made a very cheesy pillow with mom's help. An I could not get it right.

so much time and effort in that sewing style
I usually just thread in and out in a forward manner, but they end up uneven and filled with holes OTL
It makes me admire plushy makers even more!

hehe that's called "running stitch" (the one u just described)... not soo good for toys, I don't think. Maybe you could give this one a go?

sounds good! I have tried this stitch in the past, but I'm so impatient it never really worked
though now, I know where to put the needle back into, so I can do it properly now XD Plus it's a lot neater for toys.
I've probably already asked you this before, but do you use a sewing machine to make some of your plushies?

This is a great tutorial. Your photos and explanations are very clear.
I do all of my sewing by hand and live by this stitch, but always struggle with knotting at the beginning and end. Looking forward to trying your beginning and ending method. Thanks so much!

I really needed this. Our sewing machine doesn't work (can't remember when it did) and I have only experience sewing the ribbons on points shoes.

naww there's nothing sadder than a broken sewing machine... except maybe an icecream on the ground. Or a lost balloon. ;___;

I think the way you finish stitching with the knot technique will be a life saver for me XD Knots are so annoying for me :I
It's funny....I find the back stitch useless for me. I've used in on a few stuffed animals that I've made, and it always ends horribly. The running stitch seems to work for me. I dunno...maybe I'm dumb or something XD But either way, this is a really helpful tutorial for those who don't hand stitch.

How do you get your back stitch to look so nice? Mine looks so...bleh...even though you don't see the stitching afterwards XD

This is actually very helpful, as I've been doing the running stitch and didn't know it. It's the stitch my mom showed me, and since she sews mostly on the machine, I guess she doesn't need to know many hand stitches.
I'll be sure to use the back stitch from now on!
